Advice for touch up paint
I recently received a nickel sized chip in the hood of my G8 GT. I'm picking up touch up paint today and plan on taking care of it tomorrow. Thing is...I've never used touch up paint before.
My plan is to wash it, touch it up, then move on to polishing, etc. If it matters, my G8 is "White Hot". Any advice? |

I recently fixed some scratches on my RJT and wow! I'm very impressed I got it that good. Anyhow, to do it right, requires patience. Also the ability to stop at "good enough" Know that you will never get it good enough as the factory finish. If the bare metal is exposed, and you have a bit of rust, you will need to sand it. I recommend using a fiberglass sanding pen. 3m makes a nice one. Then coat it with some primer, and leave it over night! Remember patience? You will need to let your car look like crap for a couple of days. When applying the paint, go very thin, and wait about 10 minutes between coats. I personally gave up on coating my touch up with clear coat, since it has a tendency to darken the paint, and no longer match. Once you have gotten the scratch/chip to your liking or "good enough" leave it again overnight. The following day you can then polish it. I've been very successful with quixx, and meguires scratchx for this. It is recommended that you then leave it alone for 30 days before waxing it. Also if you get the paint blobs, or mess up, having some goof off around helps as this stuff will remove the touch up paint when it is a few days old but not your factory paint. Hope that helps. |

There are essentially no instructions on the bottle other than "shake well before applying".

eh...it's livable for the moment. i'm going to clean her up and hit it again. the paint seemed to thin out quite a bit after a day or so. the spot isn't noticable from far away, but if you get up close and look for it it's easy to spot...along with a few others i touched up at the same time.

I bet no one would even notice it unless you pointed it out... but then again its the whole fact that YOU know about it.
