Borla Atak Question

Hey, non mechanic woman here lol... I had a 2017 v6 camaro that I put a boral atak axel back exhaust on and I LOVED IT!

I live in NY and the dealer says my borla wont pass inspection on my old car because of the new laws. From what I have seen it is still legal but does anyone know for sure? Rest of the exhaust is stock. I obviously wont tell them it's legal because they are giving it back to me most likely lol.

Also who has an axel back borla atak on their v8? I dont want it obnoxious loud, but stock is not working for me!

Thanks for your help and I will probably have the v6 atak for sale if anyone is interested.

I heard NY upped the fine for any exhaust louder than stock. The new law from last year makes the fine $1,000 if you get caught. It used to be $150.

I read the new law and it talks about cut outs and other mods/ muffler deletes. Also says over 90 decibels. All I really care about is passing NY state inspection each year!

so i have a borla atak cat back on my 2022 Zl1. other then cold start up its not that loud. and even at cold start up it calms own fairly quick. At idle on warm up and on touring mode it no different then the stock. At cruising speed on the interstate it not really any louder then stock. With the cars rev limiter even if you rev it while sitting still in park its not all that loud. Now when you are under load with the peddle down its fairly loud but they don't inspect cars that way do they I would say at idle on a warm engine and in stealth mode or touring I wouldn't see why a inspection station would fail you.

So is that 90 dB moving? I think the SAE spec that most states and automakers use is for 95 dB but at a specfic RPM tested statically. OEM pass-by is tighter, but at the state level they don;t usually requires pass-by.

It goes on to say things like, cant be louder than a lawn mower at 50 feet away and a few other distance things. I think you cant hear the car running from 200 feet away. The law was poorly written and every thing I have seen is that inspection shops dont have a decibel reader. HOWEVER, NYC has put in stealth decibel readers and people are getting mailed tickets or asked to come in for an exhaust inspection if caught. I am in Upstate NY, so I think I'm years away from that. I just want to be able to pass inspection. Ill take my chances with the ticket lol.

I’m on Long Island and the ATAK sounds great. Not too obnoxious and I wish it were a tiny bit more aggressive imo. I just had my car inspected (end of February)with zero problems and I have the mid pipes as well. I didn’t even know the law was changed haha.

My NPP exhaust was at 94 dB stock... not sure how reliable these cell phone SPL meters are, but Al Oppenheiser did talk about riding the fringe of legality (SAE 95 dB) with the exhaust design in an interview, so the number feels right.

Do you have to do annual inspections in NY on a 5-year old car? Heck, even the draconian NJ law I was subjected to before was more lax than that (every 2 years), unless I'm misremembering, but I'm pretty sure cars in the family went to inspection every other year, and my 2SS was exempt as a new car for 5 years...

VA does every year inspection and if you're in the crazier parts its smogged every year too after I think MY+4?

NY is annual inspection for every car, regardless of age. It only has to pass the standard for the year it was produced. Cars older than 25 years are "mechanical" only, brakes, lights, wipers, etc.....

As for exhaust, it isn't only decibel reading, but they are supposed to look for any pipe or muffler modifications. The decibel reading is by law enforcement and/or cameras to capture the sound while driving.

Yes, stock NPP is over 90 decibels as it is.

Can't you just put it in tour (stealth) mode for inspection? I have 2nd cats deleted and the ATAX axle back and it gets really quiet when you change modes

Stock NPP, it won't matter, it is stock, no modifications, no violation of law. No need to "fake" it by changing modes.

The law is to crack down on modified exhaust systems.

I meant with the ATAK axle back, if you weld them on instead of clamping there is nothing except the borla name on the mufflers/tips to show it's even aftermarket

That is a roll of the dice depending one where you get inspected. I am not and will not be modified, so, I have no concern.

The exhaust mods will still be obvious, all depends on how close they look. As someone mentioned above, they had no issue with theirs.

It will also depend on WHERE in NY, metro NY and Long Island are much stricter than the rest of NY state. What passes upstate will likely fail in the metro area.
They do not even want ANY cars in NYC if they had their way!
