Cranky Tranny Help!

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

It just started getting cooler here. Overnight it gets down to low 30's and sometimes doesn't get over 50 during the day.

Since the weather change, my tranny started grinding going into second and third. I had no issues during the summer. I swapped out the ATF for the Tremec HP MTF and it is still unhappy.

What do you guys think?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The car has 25K on it.

I also have swapped over to the Tremec HPMTF and didn't notice any difference cool/cold than stock, not that this was expected. No issues shifting here on my 2017 ZL1. I am likely putting it away within a week anyways

As opposed to a cranky crank? You know, some god-awful lower end noise!

How are you shifting it? Make sure that you are being gentle with it when cold. Don't bang it into gear, take your time when you shift when the transmission is cold.

That's my take on the issue.

I don't cram it into gear. It grinds on an easy shift into second.

So, you feel it could be a common symptom of a cold high performance tranny?

If I double clutch it and shift it slow, it goes in smooth. But at least one other forum member is not experiencing the grinding? I don't want to work around a tranny problem - I want it to work right. Am I prolonging a problem that might not explode until next summer when I 6K no lift shift it ?

M6 is known for not liking 2nd gear when cold. Even in sunny Fl, mine has a rough time going into 2nd the first time or two after sitting overnight.

I find myself going 1st to 3rd for the first block or three, then 2nd drops right in.

So, a easy lazy shift form 1st to 3rd is silky smooth, or do you still feel a little resistance?

I don't think it's normal for it to grind. It might be a little notchy when cold, but I would say that grinding doesn't sound normal.

At the same time, if your transmission works fine when warmed up, I wouldn't worry about the synchro grenading itself at high RPM.

wouldn't call it the smoothest, i do not have to fight it, but it doesn't grind either.

Do you notice any clutch slip? This can be a result of faulty throw out bearing or even a wearing clutch. It’s a bit far fetched, but definitely a possibility.

Notchy - I'm not sure what that means. The grind I'm referring to is kinda like a six tooth grind, if that makes sense. It doesn't fight me, it just makes a little noise that wasn't there in the summer.

Maybe what you are referring to is the "Notchiness" the above poster is talking about? When I put it in third, I don't fight it neither, but I can still feel it go in, if that makes sense. During the summer, when I hotfoot it through the gears, I feel nothing in the stick.

I am sure the clutch is in fine shape.

Make sure the slave circuit doesn't have any air in it. You may not be disengaging the clutch as well as you think...
