Throttle body for build
Getting around to thinking about the throttle body for my build. The short version of the build list is: forged internal 376, BTR stage 3 PDS cam, Frankenstein heads, Kenne Bell supercharger.
I know that twin screw superchargers like the inlet to breathe as freely as possible. I don’t know where I’ll end up on the dyno. Maybe 700-800 RWHP would be my guess. I’m wondering how much a bigger throttle body would add? Are there any good quality aftermarket throttle bodies out there? |

For that kind of build and power I would suggest a Nick Williams 102mm boosted TB.

^^^ This for sure. My buddy has one on his 2.9 Whipple, I and I bought one for my NA'd build to change out on my ported LOD manifold. They are a great looking and well made piece of equipment.

On a pd blower the bigger the inlet/tb, the better. With that said the nw 103mm is where it's at

I saw a gain at the same power level. And I saw a loss with a centri on more power.

This is based on my current experience.
Supercharged SS in the early years with a TVS 2300 was plagued with TB problems with the only solution long time ago at that time being a very expensive TB. TBs are an airflow manager. Too small to support the blower demand (blower size and max RPM and engine RPM and blower pulley ratio) and it will show up on the dyno or at the track. LSAs from GM start with a mild cam and 1.9L pd blower with an 83mm TB. Folks with cams and blower mods manage to survive with the 83mm TB and it can be had as a ported TB by some aftermarket providers netting 90mm. With my journey I went from 83 to a NA LS3 90mm. It worked ok for low RPMs and cruising BUT it slammed shut and put the car into limp mode when being "spirited". We then put a ported blower and Boosted 102 NW and it worked fine. I put about 1100 miles on it. We then installed a Kong and the NW102 slammed shut. Makes sense, bigger blower more demand so we put on a Boost prepped NW103 works great but we had to go to a 5 inch intake to keep down the vacuum at WOT on the dyno. The Boosted prepped polished finish NW102 now sits on a shelf in storage. Answer of what all to do is directly related to the sum of all the parts. New Boosted NW102 TB are rumored to not be available and is now producing the better drive by wire motored 103mm TB. LS3 90mm TBs have reputed history of slamming shut and my personal experience confirmed it. I have no information on the ported 83mm but others do. Mine is sitting on the shelf new in the box next to my NW102. Depending on the end game and to save $$$ just go with the Boosted prepped NW103 and don't look back. From there it is all relative to your tuner's experience. Good luck.

Very interesting. Thanks for all that detail. Must be safeguards in the tune that can’t be overridden that control the TB. I guess I have no idea where to go from here. Thinking maybe just getting my stock LS3 ported and calling it a day. The NW102 may work. But seems like a crapshoot.
Not sure where to go. Last edited by cc-rider; 11-15-2021 at 09:31 PM. |

This or stock. I tried the Snake Eater Performance TB, which is said to work with boost, but my tuner didnt want to mess with so many new parts at once, so I used the stock TB. Sold the SEP before I really tried it, but they offer NO Tuning support, so that sucks.

After researching further, I’m actually thinking of going with the Nick Williams 112mm throttle body. The Kenne Bell charger came with a 4.5” intake tube and the manifold inlet is massive and will take the 112. So I might as well just go as big as I can since all the components are pre-built to be able to utilize it to the greatest extent.
