Engine down. Bent a rod. Time for a new short block
I think I finally took out my stock LS3 with the Kenne Bell huffing into it. Was rowing through the gears doing a burnout and at high rpm in 2nd gear it lurched hard and then started running rough with a little vibration. I was at least able to drive it home about 30 miles. Started it the next day and I have a distinct knock that is coming from the bottom of my engine and not the valve train. I’ll try to have my son upload the video to YouTube and post it.
So. Time for a new forged short block which is what I wanted anyway so I can turn up the boost. Open to recommendations on a good place to get a forged short block.. |

Thompson Motorsports 388 or 427 iron shortblock should do it.

Venom racing engines has pretty good pricing for short blocks as well.

Finally got to my blown Camaro after it sitting in the barn for 2 years. Took off my exhaust and I can see exactly what took out my engine. Guts of the high flow cats let loose and lodged in my x pipe and...kaboom! Still haven’t dug into the engine to confirm bent rods yet. But I’m pretty sure that’s it. Will update. Got the forged rotating assembly on order!
Chalk me up for another boosted engine owner who didn’t follow the advice that no cats will hold up under boost. Lesson learned. But looking forward to my new forged LS3 and what it can do (catless!!!!) |

I ordered a forged rotating assembly from cnc-motorsports out of South Dakota. Local engine shop to do the machine work. Going to build it myself. Hopefully can still use my block. We’ll see when I tear into it.

Yeah, my cats blew out with a little shot of nitrous. Driver's side waded up in the cat, passenger side made it to the rear diff .

This is the only reason I don't want to run cats. Its a bit loud... well a lot loud... but I don't have to worry about this! Now you get to built it better though!

Yeah. Damn cats. You’d think someone could build one to hold up to boost abuse. But it doesn’t seem so.
I think the real problem with aftermarket cats isn’t exactly the aftermarket cat…I think they need to be placed at exactly the right place down stream in the exhaust. Here I put 9 psi of boost at the engine, long tube headers, and the cats are right there. Probably way too much heat…or something. I bet if someone had the R&D money that Chevy has, they could find an aftermarket cat that would work with a blower and long tube headers. After all…the ZL1 does just fine with it. But we all slap them on together and have no idea just how the heat and flow works at that location. Again…lesson learned for me. But going to start tearing into the engine this week. Should be a fun build. |
