That 2019 number is too high:

Quote:
During the 2019-2020 influenza season, CDC estimates that influenza was associated with 38 million illnesses, 18 million medical visits, 405,000 hospitalizations, and 22,000 deaths. The influenza burden was higher in young children (0-4 years) and adults (18-49 years) compared with a recent season with the 2017-2018 season, a recent season with high severity, and provides evidence to support how severe seasonal influenza can be at any age.
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/2019-2020.html

Some might claim social distancing, masks and other techniques to avoid Covid also avoids flu or it could be people who would normally get flu (and maybe die from it) died of Covid instead.

My wife and son were cursed at while in a line because they were socially distancing. It happens both ways.

If the vaccine was a true vaccine, one you got it you'd be good to go, or at minimum be substantially reduced on chance of getting the illness. The problem is covid is a missing virus that will be with us for the foreseeable future. This isn't because the unvaccinated are killing the world, it's because it's a mutating virus that will do what is necessary to survive.
We eliminated Polio because of vaccination. There wasn't the same pushback as there is today. If there had been, it would have mutated also. Same with the flu, there's so many variations because it's been allowed to get out of control. Same will happen with Covid at this rate.

One of the articles I posted earlier touches on this, that "back in the day" you did not have the antivaxxers and if you did they were not as big an issue so it was "easier" to get things under control. I improvised the statement.

Well, there are several reasons for that:

1) The polio vaccine wasn't a "rush job".
2) You didn't recover 100% when you were stricken.

The whole mutation thing:

That's a perfectly acceptable stance. My point has been and always will be that if someone chooses not to be vaccinated or adhere to other safety protocols like masks and social distancing, then they shouldn't get upset if that prohibits them from being able to go to certain places. Businesses have the right to refuse service to people that don't adhere to their rules. And states have the right to enact mask mandates as they see fit to protect the public.

Hum, it was my understanding that mask wearing was not for your protection as much as mitigating the spread.
