Brake Job Question.

I was in to my dealership the other day to have the brakes done, I was told they were getting thin on the front. The car is a DD with 44k on the clock. They didn't have the rear pads in stock so we just did the front for now, good thing! When the tech got the front wheels off and was checking the rotors for thickness he told me that they could not me turned other wise they would not be in spec, too thin to do the proper braking job they were designed to do and could not guarantee the job as the rotors might get hot and warp.
I asked why they could not be turned as I have NEVER had a car that the rotors could not be turned at least once, he then said that now the new sports cars brakes are designed so that the rotors AND the pads will wear at the same time due to the softness of the metal in the rotor. So I had to get new rotors and pads to do the job and it cost me 350 bucks after my club discount. My question is, did I just get screwed by my dealership? Or is this how it really does work, also when I get ready to do the rears next month, those rotors need to be replaced also, he checked them for me too.
Thanks for any feedback..

I warped one of my fronts (at the track) and had all four turned no problem at O'Reilly Auto. The car had about 12k; miles on it at the time and the factory pads were about 1/2 gone.

I actually think that's pretty reasonable for Brembos at a dealership.

And yes, rotors and pads are extremely common now. I work at a BMW dealership and every one of our cars needs the front rotors replaced with the pads. SOMETIMES they can get away with turning the rears, but that's maybe 10% of the time.

And as far as the price goes - front brakes on a 2010 run-of-the-mill 5-series:

I'd get a second opinion before you do the rears.

when you guys say turn the rotors, I'm assuming you mean switching the fronts with the rears- yes?

Turning the rotors is the done by mounting them on a lathe (or grinder) and removing just enough material to smooth and balance the braking surface.

Without actual measurements of the depth of wear it's hard to say if they could be turned.

i gotta say i dont think there making rotors any softer but pads are getting harder to increase the stoppin power which in return lowers the life on the rotors. the only simple way to know if there getting you is to ask to see the run out spec and to see the rotor it self checked.. if true most shops will have no problem showing you what the micrometer says...

It's pretty common to do rotors with pads, but generally I'll go through 2 pad sets per 1 set of rotors. I personally never turn rotors. I just clean them up real well with some brake cleaner and sand paper to remove any left-over material and then bed in the new pads.

Still sounds like you got a good deal though.

Best regards,

Thanks everyone for the feed back, is much appreciated. New rotors and new pads on the front feels really good and she stops awesomely. Went with all AC Delco, will probably do the same for the rears, they look good also. Thanks again guys..
