Ls3 Asa cam..

Hey guys, I have a Ls3 with a Howard's ASA cam, gmpp dual plane intake an 950 quick fuel carb..thinking I left quite a bit of power on the table with that cam( maybe I am wrong)..need some advice of a gpi ss3 or cam motion titan or junkyard dog rectangular port cam?? Will there be a significant power difference to justify the effort??

With a stock ls3 intake and EFI, 2 inch headers, 3 inch exhaust and the 110 version of that cam, my car made 502whp on a Mustang dyno in excellent weather. (here is one example of a high reading mustang dyno. everyone swears they read low). I dont believe the dyno numbers myself. I think it was probably more like 470ish. I also used it in with a centri supercharger and made 913whp on a dynojet.

There is another member on here who made 486whp with this same cam. This is about what most bolt on cam cars make.

Generally speaking, there are much better cams out there. I liked it because it required very little additional spring pressure than stock. I just threw in a set of slightly stiffer beehives for $120. Unlike stiff spring sets that should be changed every 20k miles.

I dont know how it would behave in your setup. But I'd guess you're probably looking at 20whp.

Thanks for the insight, that's what I was wondering (hp) if it would be significantly more..car is mostly street driven an was curious if it's worth a swap to a bigger cam

I think you'd find there are significantly more powerful options than the Howard's ASA cam. It's pretty conservative by nature, which allows it to work with a fairly mild set of springs. Stepping up to something like our SS3 would be significant change, both in overall duration and lift, but in lobe design as well. If you want to work out what GPI cam would be right for your needs you can feel free to message me and we'll get you sorted out.

I can pretty much tell you anything you want to know about that one, both from our GPI perspective, as well as my personal perspective. I have had that cam in my 2011 M6 Camaro since 2018.

I have a Howard's asa cam on a 113 lsa. Yes I fully realize that there are more powerful cams out there & I am considering upgrading in the future. But for now it is good. I run it with Pac 1218 springs. It is a very driveable cam. Other that a light chop at idle it drives absolutely like stock. gave me a nice little bump in power & with my LTs & Npp exhaust, sounds fantastic. Get compliments all the time. So overall it is not a bad cam at all.

Got your message on our help-desk and responded. I'll answer briefly here as well for those interested in the info - the SS3 will work with a 3200rpm stall and drive fine. Ideally, that cam would like more like a 3600-4000rpm stall to best fit it's torque curve and provide maximum acceleration from a dig, but the 3200 isn't a huge sacrifice in performance and for a fun cruiser is just fine.

The ASA cam is what's in the 525hp crate engine from GM. Most stage 3ish cams make 560ish at the crank.

Good info acammer!! Just some food for thought for the OP, I have a TSP Stage 3 cam with all the goodies and ran a 3200 stall for 2 years as my builder/tuner said it would be fine, and it was, BUT, with that cam and the LOD X1 manifold, I noticed I was leaving a LOT of performance on the table. Just wouldn't get out of the hole like acammer stated, so with the great info on here, questions asked and research, I upped the stall to a Circle D 5C 4200-4500 and man o man what a difference in how the car performed!! Totally night and day difference. Very happy with it and it drives just fine during normal driving.

For sure that X1 would like all the stall speed you can give it, I bet it drove ok with the 3200, but was pretty lazy on throttle stabs compared to what you have with the 4200. Heck, even a 6000rpm stall wouldn't be too much for that intake, it LOVES to rev!
