Here is my VIN# 2G1FT1EW2A9191294. You should be able to call the dealer and they should be able to look up my VIN and find the exact resolution.

Hopefully this is helpful. It took me several months to finally figure this out!!

(My post earlier in this thread #130)This thread is clearly about the "grinding noise when backing up" which is the 2 or 3 second noise you hear almost as though some metal is dragging on the ground. It used to happen to me when I would be reversing out of my driveway with the wheels slightly turned while slowly moving backwards. It would usually hit when I get to the ramp part. Of the driveway. I mentioned the software update to the dealer and gave the VIN from the guy that posted a few pages back. They found the update, recalibrated the computer or something and I have not heard the noise since.

Just thought I would post again about how I got mine fixed and never heard it ever again after this. If your still getting this noise when backing out of a driveway while slightly turning, I suggest you go to the dealer with the information above. Send me a pm if this does solve your problem!

DUCQ,

Thanks for the post. I have a 2011 convertible with approximately 4800 miles, and like many others, had the rear end problems, resulting in the dealer replacing the rear end. Now, I have the grinding noise when backing out of my garage.

I am going to approach the dealer with the Vin # that "chadkatona" originally posted, and see if I can rid of that nasty sound. I will let you know how it goes.

Thank you

I just read through a couple of pages, not all but a few. One time, I think last year, I was driving forward about 1-2 minutes after taking it out of the garage. I thought I saw my neighbor so I stopped and put it into reverse and have it some gas. I took my foot completely off the clutch and I heard like a banging noise until I basically stopped. I did not floor it in reverse, I just have it some gas to try to I maybe 5mph in reverse. Is this what you guys are referring to?

My symptoms appear to be happening under same cirumstances, but to me it sounds more like thumping. When i back out of my garage in the morning i hear it and i hear it when i make a sharp turn from a parking space and continues as i pull forward for several feet. This just started in the past few months. I am at 26k miles.

45th Camaro,

Hello, with my car, it is a distinct, grinding, metallic sound when putting the car in reverse, to back out of the garage. This is after the car has sat for a while, and it only lasts 2 or 3 seconds.

Previously, I had the problem with the rear end groaning and binding up, while backing and turning. The dealer's first fix, was to replace rear end seals and differential fluid. I drove it for another 500 miles with no difference. The rear end continued to bind up and affect driveability. The dealer then replaced the rear end with a new one. So far, this has fixed the problem, and I have had a noticeable improvement in gas mileage.

Thank you

The groaning from my diff has returned again. Dealer put Vette diff fluid in it and that seemed to quiet it down for a while about 2 years back. Noticing my gas mileage has been dropping a lot lately too. Sounds like I need a new diff. Hopefully my GM extended warranty will cover this.

Figured out what's causing my grinding issues, the spider gears and carrier bearings are trashed.

I tried backing down a driveway in neutral and it made the same sound.

All that is needed to make the grinding sound is to be moving backward (down a driveway) and have the wheels turned to the right halfway or so.....anyone else confirm this?

Confirmed! Exact same issue here

I have the same issue with my 2013 ZL1. When backing down or driving up my driveway and turning the wheel to the right to exit or enter my driveway (respectively), I hear the grinding noise. This doesn't happen if I keep a constant speed but does happen if going slowly!! Very disconcerting! I know grinding anything is not good -Guess I'll try changing the diff fluid!
