I don't think that style motor would ever be choice for performance, it would fit the appliance mold as a cost reducer.

The torque vs rpm, w/efficiency graph was the interesting part for me, as a general way to see electric motors.

Since Raptor made a post about the Tesla 3's strong passing power form 30-60... They would need more gears to pull hard above that. The best motor effieciency would expect to show at highway speed, if it's not 'oversized' for power, but in the low gear.
Yeah, the main reason the efficiency drops so much for EVs on the highway is drag, roll resistance and lack of regen. You will find most EVs spend a lot of time in the wind tunnel and come equipped with low roll resistance tires. Michelin actually has a performance EV tire now. (https://www.michelinman.com/auto/tir...pilot-sport-ev)

When it comes to power at highway speeds the Model 3 pulls ok, but not nearly as hard as it does from 0-70mph. Lack of gearing would be one solution but Tesla found a way while still using a single speed transmission. One this tech trickles down to lower priced models you will never see transmissions since they add weight, cost and complexity.

I love performance ICE based vehicles just as much as the next enthusiast but you have to give credit to Tesla for engineering such a machine. The issue now is the 0-60mph game it over. These vehicles are now too fast. They launch with ease and go fast without any drama whatsoever. The challenge facing many automakers of enthusiast vehicles is figuring out how to inject some personality and drama into a performance EV. We have seen what Dodge has announced so far... Not an easy task.

I welcome actual conflicting data to my statements. 1. Global initiative to move away from ownership so cars aren't sitting and emissions can be controlled was recently discussed, but is an old idea. 2. Popular initiative to move away from beef/pork/chicken due to emissions from animals (even this was in the Green New Deal). Bill Gates proposes bugs, lots of press and support of this. 3. Old initiative to remotely limit home HVAC operation to protect the grid. Utilities have been doing this for a decade with remote controls on A/C Condensing Units, and a move to electric heat (as natural gas is frowned upon) will conflict with charging and limited grid supply.

They called it fear mongering... until they too were forced to comply.

Oh, so now they’re initiatives. You didn’t mention that in the other post.
Anyhow yes, 100% fear mongering.

1. Good Luck

2. That won't happen and rebellions would start if it did

3. My mom at her house in Connecticut has three of those window unit AC with no remote from when I was a kid they have no control over that and if they do she can switch that giant generator she has to defy them. They tried a stunt like that here where I live and it was ended really quick.

I’ll leave this for the bug eating guy … California is a joke and hopefully they keep their politics to themselves.

Californians asked not to charge their EVs

it seems like the electric issue is a quarterly thing at C/D now.must be time to stock up on extension cords.

I have been reading c&d since the 80's. I can remember their praise of the citation x11. I have agreed with their reviews pretty much over everybody else. If their is an affordable electric car worthy of being called a driver's car I hope they can find it . It might be a while.

Yeah, the Taycan might be the closest EV today to a driver's car, but it's 5000 lbs... so hard to call it a driver's car when it weights as much as a Tahoe. Nevermind how fast it can get to 60.

They could in theory get the weight down to ZL1 levels closer to 4k lbs, but the battery will be in the 40kWh range (think Nissan Leaf or 2/3rs of a Chevy Bolt) so it certainly will not have grand tourer range anymore. Yeah it'll be a great driver, but only for 100 miles.

Probably in another 25-30 years they'll have sufficiently improved power density to cut weight of a 100kWh battery below 800 lbs. So yeah it's gonna be a while and I'll not see it in my lifetime.

I’m still holding out for a Delorean that can make power out of trash.

Sorry but you are now just making up criteria that suits you. Weight has zero to do with being an exciting/interesting/engaging car to drive.
