Enthusiasts sleeping on Z28

Just noticed that GT350R pricing is thru the roof. I see asking/bidding over 100k.

I think people not realizing how great/special the Z28 is. To me, it's up there with GT3RS/Integra Type R (DC5)/2.7RS/M3CSL/CobraR/MclarenF1 and other track focused limited production/homologation special cars.

They’re paying fir the name. One thing Ford does right is market to collectors. Look at the Ford GT. Got its ass busted by a ZR1, but one goes for millions, one doesnt.

Mustang buyers are just nuts. Look at the prices for Elanore clones. They go for more than real COPO Camaros and 427 Vettes.

The Ford folks buy into their own hype. Look at the prices on old Broncos.

They are just plain nuts.

Like Judge says, Ford does marketing and GT events like no other American cars. Only if Chevy did the same, Z28 and ZL1 would be priced very high. Supply and demand. They produced so many GT350 its unreal compared to Z28, yet the demand for GT350 is very high. Hell, makes me want to get a GT350....Z28 came and went like the wind. Hope later in time, people will really appreciate the short lived 2014 and 2015 Z28 were.

I am a car guy, always been always will be. Grew up in the backseat of a crew cab square body going to the race track, car shows you name it my family had a car for it.. Been to SEMA too many times and been coast to coast to different events. A few years back when I decided it was time for a no BS, turn key modern performance car my buddy said what about a 14 or 15 Z/28... I quickly said I'm not really into the Camaro's.. He said do you know what the car is all about?? I assumed just another trim package.. Boy was I wrong. My hunt for the right Z06 ended quickly... I don't think the cars every received the press they deserved. Once I purchased the car and my "car friends" seen it I quickly learned they didn't know anything about it either... I had seen in another Z/28 vanity plate post a guy has IYKYK... Couldn't be more accurate. Back to the subject of this post... Yeah theses cars didn't climb at nearly the same speed as the market. At the same time I am ok with that because I'm not ready to be tempted to sell it.

I wonder if much of it is tied to the differentiation between the 'the cool kid car' and the pedestrian version. Collectors aren't buying cars to *drive*, and no way to race to their capability. They are buying them to show off, to look at, and to be seen in/with the car.

Can the non-enthusiast tell at a glance you are in the cool kid version? The GT is immediately recognizable. Can the general population tell the ZR1 from a base 'Vette? Or in other words, do they immediately recognize it as not the same car they saw grandpa driving at the golf course? In the same way, the Z28 isn't immediately recognizable as not the 6 cylinder base car to the non-automotive enthusiast crowd and doesn't exude that air of exclusivity because of it, regardless of the reality. If you're buying to be one of the cool kids, being seen as a cool kid is more important than track times.

I’d say not only the general public but the dealerships don’t even know about the Z28(5th gen).
The only reason some know about the ZL1 is if they’ve done SC warranty work.
As for the OP, I’d avoid the dealer like the plague.
But I hear the 350R’s, that do any track time, are spending a lot of time in the dealerships.

I'm not complaining!! It means more of us can afford and enjoy this special car. I love it that I know what's this beast is all about. Blew me away and I'm coming from Japanese/German brands.

It's a freaking bargain compare to paying MSRP for M2Comp/M2CS/M4Comp/M4GTS/GTR/GT350/Type R/GT3/GT4/ISF now. Some don't even have the racing hardware like dry-sump/ceramic brakes...

Yes, I'm asking for good shop in OC SoCal area just in case work is needed in the future. Please let me know. Thanks.

You are right, Z28 name does not have the recognition it deserves like BMW M/Porsche GT/Merc AMG/Honda R/Shelby Cobra/Audi RS badges.

However, please correct me if I'm wrong, GM has more wins than any other brands in North America.

Non car people instantly recognize M/AMG/Shelby/Porsche GT as performance level trim regardless of numbers.

Unless you are a GM guy, it's confusing between all the Z variants. Maybe GM should have a de facto performance brand? Trademark "Z"?

Z71, ZR4, ZL1, Z/28, Z06, ZR1.

If I am a regular buyer, I know that the trucks have an off road or 4x4 type trim level package. And that Corvette has the halo Z badge cars. Up to the ZL1 1LE, no real off the cuff, stand out to you way of visually knowing that the ZL1 or Z/28 were better. Had to look at the stats.
Sure there is the hood, and body bits. I more often than not get the "cool body kit", nice SS. Everything must have been added or put on the car, rarely known as being all OEM.

A bargain compared to GT350R that sold for 105k on C&B.

Too raw for some people but l love it.

Last of the NA engine and we will not see this type again.

EV and hybrid and 1cyl. turbo.....

I owned a Z/28 and currently own a GT350. I tracked the Z/28 and I track the GT350. (primary use)

I've often wondered the same thing Highrevving asked... why has the Z/28's value been so sleepy?

I have no idea.

There were maybe 3 people who approached me on the street that knew what the Z/28 was. 1801 cars produced... 1801! With that number alone I would have thought they would see faster appreciation especially with this current market.

The Z/28 has appreciated about the same as my "base" GT350. The only GT350Rs that I've seen go "crazy" are the very low mileage ones with emphasis on the "Heritage" models. So yes -- I agree much of the spike is due in large part to Ford's marketing and playing off the history with Carroll Shelby, the GT40, etc.

The Z/28 is a stouter built car. Fewer overall issues. (mainly electronic) I don't know why that is as Ford certainly understands how to build automobiles. I have no knowledge of the "regular" Mustangs and Camaros.

40 or 50 years from now I have to imagine the 2014/15 Z/28 will be a very valuable piece of history. So too, a well preserved GT350R Heritage.

Sometimes I think we just need to give credence to the general overall population and in this case -- more people like the Ford Mustang. All-time production figures tend to back that up.
