Floating the Gears?
So, I experimented with "floating" the gears in my M6 SS today. Seems rather easy between 1800 and 2000 to slip it right into gear. However, I got to thinking...does this do any damage to the synchros in the tranny?

If thats what he means. Then yes it will over time cause problems. If not sooner.

I'v been doing it to all my cars over the past 10 years (still own my first car and drive it too) and never had any trans issues, as long as your not grinding gears and it goes in to gear like butter, no damage will be done. You need to match the rmps with your speed and it will fall right in.

Yep! It seems to fall right into gear, no grinding or anything. I can't see it messing up the gears, only perhaps the synchros.

I know it is not exactly the same. Way back when, my 2nd car was VW Bug, drove that sucker without a clutch for a year. Would start it in gear and shift without any problems. It got to be a pain at lights and hills (using the parking brake). I wasn't a wrench back then, so it took me a year to actually check why I didn't have a clutch. Turns out the adjustment wing-nut by the bell housing had simply fallen off. Less than a buck and in 15 minutes the clutch was working again.

You won't hurt anything as long as you don't clash the gears. Basically you are matching the engine speed with the driveline speed in a given gear. The clutch will live forever if you do it forever..but technically you can't.
I always slip the trans out of gear into neutral when I slow to a stop. If you feather the throttle it slips right out. And, if you don't actually have to come to a complete stop, you can easily slip it into first gear. Just beware if you miss your "opportunity" you'll clash the gears. Then, go back to basics.

As soon as you know what the rpm differential between gears is you can upshift or downshift without using the clutch. The key is to have it slide in and out of each gear with no sound or feeling in the stick. Done properly I don't see how this can caise any damage. If it is done wrong or forced, that's a different story.

I'm too afraid of messing something up to even try doing this.

Did it in my Jeep for the entire 12 years I owned it...never had a tranny isssue. Do it now in the SS as well. As long as it falls into gear with no ammount of force needed, you're good to go.
