Do I need a High Stall Torque Converter?

After installing a performance camshaft. Will I need to install a higher stall torque converter.
At what point will I need a High Stall Torque Converter.
Typically any Camshaft bigger that a Stage 1 will require a higher stall torque converter.

What cam did you install and what stall did you go with?

What brand of Torque Converter did you go with?

Let us know! Thanks CAM5!

My cam is the TSP 231/246-112 LSA, 614/641 lift with all the valve train to go with it.

Original converter was a Precision Industries 3200 single disc lockup converter, wasn't enough for my power band. So I went with this one per the advice of a forum member.

Circle D 5C single disc 4500 lockup converter. Way better performance for my power band which pulls real hard from 5k to 7200. Totally happy with it and for me, is also great for the street driving.

While a stall is eventual for me, I'm actually running the factory stall with a BTR Stage 2 NA LS3 cam. No, I haven't unlocked the full potential of the cam by keeping the factory stall, but I got the chop I was after, a significant increase in power that I was also after, and my wife asked me not to race the car. So in the end I don't HAVE to have a stall for now, but it is a goal in the future for me. I'm looking at a 3200 Circle D.

I'm using the GPI SS3 VVT cam with a Circle D single disc 3600. It's like night and day difference between the factory torque converter and the circle d. I had the GPI SS1 VVT cam with the factory torque converter before and even with that much smaller of a cam I still should have went with a bigger stall because it always pushed through the brakes. I must say that I am truly impressed with the circle d 3600 because even with this GPI SS3 it doesn't push through the brakes at all now. But with all that said I don't have the lock up engaged until 55 mph in 6th gear because I would usually get bucking those figures. I will also say that with the right tuning the shifts are actually softer then the factory shifting until you get on the gas that is and then you can really feel it shift. I would definitely recommend this torque converter to anyone that needs a higher stall.

Stall is one of the best bangs for your buck and something to add BEFORE you swap cams.

Ran mine for almost a year before the cam and it really helped at the track.

CSP Custom Cam 232/240 .615/.615 113 +3

FTI triple disc convertor 3000 stall

Love the combo, idles great and leaves off the line hard. Never pushes through the brakes and only problem i have at times is when i brake hard it does stall. But that's because of the big cam.

So true! I watched a video on YT by one of the converter manufacturers, can't remember which one it was, but on the bone stock 2010 Camaro they tested with a 3200 stall, they were able to knock 0.5 tenths off the ET. That's pretty cool!

That was exactly the result I had at the track...

Rarely does anyone do it in this order when adding a cam but the installs are two completely different operations so why not check out the stall 1st with stock cam instead of waiting until you "have" to do it.

Aaaand now I'm looking at torque coverters, gonna blame all of you guys, the fruits on my money tree need some time to ripen, they're getting over picked.

So does changing the torque converter mess with how the gears are set electronically, would I be able to just plop it in or would I need to get it tuned so I don't damage the gearbox. End goal is a stage 2 vvt cam but I'm thinking in long term due to costs for all this stuff, so tune would happen eventually just maybe a year or two after the torque converter.
