Brake Job Pricing

Got a couple of prices for a brake job from the mechanic I have used for years and trust

4-wheel pads and rotors
2019 ZL1

aftermarket parts $900
OE parts $3,000

What am I missing here? The mechanic said it's the most expensive brakes he has ever quoted.

Thanks for any input

Why are you replacing the rotors? Are they damaged?

Sounds about right for a full replacement. If he's a credible mecahnic, pay him for the job. or you can can get a sloppy mechanic to do it fro a 100 or 200 bucks cheaper and mess up with cosmetics on the car... who knows. If you trust him, do it!

Rock auto has OEM rotors (F/R) and OEM pads (F/R) for $1,400 total.

Either your mechanic doesn't know where to shop for parts or he was hoping to get a few bucks from you.

gmpartsdirect.com is also a good place for OEM hardware.

Super easy to replace yourself, that price is a shock to me as I've done an entire refresh on a custom Wilwood, 14 inch 2 piece rotor, 6 piston calipers (front), and 13 inch 2 piece rotor, 4 piston (rear) + pads and new wilwood fluid for slightly less if not the same.
Damn Brembo shit is expensive!!!!

$3000 sounds about right if he's going to a stealership parts dept.

Fronts have a pretty good groove. Not thinking they can be turned.

The rears are probably ok to reuse. Those are the cheap ones though.

Going to get a price from a dealer too.

May just end up doing them myself.

Stealer finally called me back

My Mechanic was not joking.

List on the rotors $828 each

Stealership quoted $2,510 for just the fronts

I literally just got my entire brakes done front and rear for well under $2Gs. You need to make friends with a local shop man.

I have a local shop that I use frequently and I always tip the mechanics, buy beer, breakfast etc. When I need work done on the fly they get me sorted quickly and don't beat me over the head.

Stay away from dealers unless you're doing warranty work. For consumables, any decent shop can get you sorted.

I mean, stealership is a bit harsh -- unless you're talking about markups on new and used cars then it fully applies. I think that it's just the cost of doing business. It's expensive to run a larger facility, keep the lights on, pay staff and mechanics, etc... so they are less likely to be in a position where they can give discounts etc.

Get a local mom and pop shop around the way to change your brakes. Unless you're bleeding them, I've seen homeless guys get the job done to make a quick buck. Literally.

read the first post. I got the $3k quote from the mom and pop I've used for years. Still seemed high.

I rarely use a dealer for anything other than warranty work.

Don't want to beat up on him, but if I can get all the OE parts for around $1,400 from Rock. It is probably worth my time to do it myself.
