Engine Oil Analysis

Question:
2017 ZL1, 929 total miles at this time.
First oil change in 2018 at 420 miles ,
2019 2nd at 620 miles Dealer used 0w/40 BUT Euro blend
2020 3rd at 795 miles Again 0w/40 EURO but this time I noticed the use of Euro spec 0W/40 and had them change to DEXOS 2 ESP 0w/40 at their cost
2021 929 miles 0w/40 DEXOS 2 ESP and engine BLACKSTONE engine oil analysis states:
We noticed some very fine metallic glitter/debris in the sample bottle this time, so that's something to pay attention to. The microscopic wear metals look good -- that's the scale on which our spectrometer reads metals, so visible metal usually goes undetected in testing. In any case, the visible metal may not necessarily signal an issue for your V-8, especially if it runs well. Maybe it's due to lingering products of break-in since the engine's still got very low miles on it. No immediate issues stand out in the current data or emerging trend. Just check back in ~100 miles.

What could the "metallic glitter/debris be, any hunch? Could that be because of the euro blend use?

I would offer that you find a way to get some miles and smiles on that great car you have. With less than 1000 miles on a 2017 I suspect that your engine still has break in wear in the oil. Go drive that thing!

No, the oil wont cause this. Honestly, using a higher saps oil is better. All these oils for emissions are not the best for engine wear. The 0w40 is a mid saps oil.

Is this correct, you have 929 miles on a MY17....and you are worried about "metallic glitter" in your oil. Please......go out and drive it, like you stole it, put some miles on that beast. This car was meant to be driven, not stored in a garage, which is cleared where it has been! But whatever floats your boat.

I swear some people buy ZL1s and think they bought an Aventador SVJ.

OP, in 10 years your car won't be worth shit at 1,000 miles vs 500,000 miles. Go drive your damn car.

I agree they should be driven.. but.. that statement above may be an over simplification. Case in point the pricing of low mileage 5th Gen Z28s right now. I wish I’d bought one 2 yrs ago (I looked at one with 3k miles ago for $40k). Oh boy do I wish I’d bought that then!!). Low mile cars like that are changing hands for $60k-70k now. It’s likely/possible that ZL1 (and especially ZLE with the 6sp manual) will keep climbing especially once the EV power trains are put in the ‘Camaro’ (I find it hard to call it a Camaro if it is a 4 dr EV).

All that being said, I’ll still drive mine, but mostly on nice days and not as an every day commuter car. I have my ‘18 Civic Type R for that! 😉

Don't worry about this stuff. Go drive it like you stole it.

This!

Dump the ESP stuff and get an oil that will protect your engine better than mobil 1. You are sacrificing engine protection for your cats.

Drive your ZL1 is my advice and don’t be that concerned about the oil.

Man just go drive that car and enjoy it, tomorrow could bring a change in your life that makes that car no longer important.

The 5th gen Z/28 was a limited production, numbered release. The ZL1 (specifically OP's 2017 ZL1) is not limited by anything except people who have money to buy it. There'll be plenty of supply long term.
