Definitely going to have to investigate.

Exhaust leak explains the P0171 perfectly.

I will definitely check them this evening. If the headers are not the culprit, where else could that noise be coming from?

I am sure you will see once you start looking.

Exhaust leaks will leave Black Trails of soot.

had a few mins during lunch to check the header bolts. i pulled the spark plug wires off, and i quickly noticed a few of them were covered in black soot. I torqued the bolts and the noise went away. i will have more time to look it over after work tho.

well the sound is still there, but it is quieter. so now i am wondering if the gasket needs to be replaced.

Yah I can see some residue on the drivers side and as I said before there was residue on the plug wires.

Often times if a exhaust leak goes unnoticed for a period of time it will damage the gasket. Probably should change it out just to be sure .

That's the plan. Got to get one ordered. Should I replace the bolts, or would they be fine?

I get both rich and lean codes but for some reason its only when i drive for 100+ straight miles and turn off car then back on.
