GM not putting in heated seats and steering wheels

Not good at all...due to the shortage

Cannot find the list but it is big and in a lot of their popular vehicles

So if you buy one of these, are they going to "retro-fit" them after they have chip availability? What a mess.

Depends on the article but yes and no.

This, along with what BMW is doing with their touchscreens, would really hurt resale value. Although it's a luxury item, if the level purchased should have it but doesn't then that really hurts it.

I read an article where they're removing the touchscreen ability and the control is now through some mechanism on the center console.

I talked to a dealer about it yesterday and all the parts except the module that controls the heated seats will be installed and once they become available the dealer will install it at no charge.

The really irritating thing about this approach is the size of the credit they are giving for it. I can guarantee you they would charge you more than $500 for it if it was a standalone option, and the impact to the MSRP it has as a standard feature is more than $500. So, you're losing out on something that should be considered a basic feature in a modern automobile while they're increasing their profit margin.

Looks like the chip thing will not get back to normal anytime soon. GM is changing direction, likely to take years...

EVs and planned tech features will double the amount of chips needed in just a few years time...

https://gmauthority.com/blog/2021/11...chip-shortage/

Just like the broader automotive industry, the ongoing global microchip shortage has had a profound impact on General Motors, forcing the automaker to cut production and reduce features across its lineup. Now, The General is seeking to curb the effects of the chip shortage with its own family of mircocontrontrolers.

During an investor conference earlier today, General Motors President Mark Reuss stated that GM was working with seven major microchip suppliers to develop three new microcontroller families in order to reduce the complexity and cost involved in implementing automobile features, as well as create a more stable source of these vital components. Reuss listed the supplier partners as including Qualcomm, STM, TSMC, Renesas, ON Semi, NXP, and Infineon. Reuss also said that the investment into the new microcontroller families would primarily “flow to the U.S. and Canada.”

Reuss stated that automotive semiconductor requirements are expected to more than double in the next few years as electric vehicles and next-generation vehicle technologies (including autonomous features like the GM Super Cruise) begin to hit the market. As such, securing a stable source of volume components for these vehicles and features is critical.

However, while many General Motors vehicles currently use a wealth of different chips for these features, the proposed families of microcontrollers will help to consolidate the various functions. Reuss stated that the new microcontrollers will be built in high volume, with as much as 10 million units annually for just one of the three microcontroller families as General Motors works to “develop an ecosystem that is much more resilient, more scalable and always there to meet our needs.” It is estimated that the three new microcontroller families will reduce the number of unique chips by as much as 95 percent.

Throughout the 2021 calendar year, General Motors has worked to combat the effects of the global microchip shortage, cutting production and features across its lineup, with the latest feature reduction affecting heated seats, ventilated seats, and heated steering wheels for a variety of GM crossovers, SUVs, and pickups.

Ahh ok, I was just curious because I just bought a BMW M8 Competition that I pick up tomorrow but it doesn't look like they were affected.

100% agree. I'd pass on a car like that if it was missing a standard feature.

Usually, the ultra and high-end models do not get affected, just the lower end crap models.
