Ford cancelling Mach 1 & GT500 orders

Saw this earlier in my news feed and it actually shocks me manufacturers haven't started openly talking about doing this already.

They are only cancelling the 2021 orders, and asking those with orders to instead place an order for a 2022 according to that article.

It is not just the Mustangs. I had a 2021 Ford Ranger on order since August. My order got canceled 3 days ago and converted to a 2022.

seems late in the year to even have had '21 orders still on the books, I woulda thought cancellations woulda been months ago.

Makes perfect sense if they are cancelling 2021 orders and converting them to 2022. 2022 are already hitting the lots.

Agree perfect sense. The short runs on 2021 might make a few cars more rare and increase their value.

The alternative would be to screw the public like GM is by shipping vehicles missing features and offering essentially no sort of compensation (a $50 discount for missing AFM compared to an increased cost of thousands of dollars in fuel is not compensation).

I would personally rather be able to get a vehicle with ALL features.

I've been trying to find a 2021 3.0 duramax GMC but just can't get one since they have been out of diesels for months so I'm ordering a 2022 next month and hope I can get it by January or February. I finally was able to get a 2021 Silverado 6.2 a few months ago because a guy cancelled his order and I happened to be at my dealer that day trying to find a GMC Sierra. Bought it on the spot.

I'm interested to see how these special edition models hold their value over time. It seems with the used car market going crazy we're not going to see the Z06's, ZL1's, GT500's etc. experience the same depreciation as they once did. Making them available to a larger audience once the original owner is done with it. Once supply issues are resolved we'll see I guess.

I am curious as well. You would think the values would stay strong but I think it depends on how well EVs are accepted in the enthusiast market. I think when Dodge releases an eMusclecar with amazing specs many folks will be intrigued at first but once they realize there is more to a car than 0-60mph they may be longing for the muscle car sound, vibration, RWD with a LSD, ripping through gears, etc.

Arguably, canceling one's previously accepted order is another form of screwing the public.

I think the best approach would be honesty (as always), calling the customer and laying out all available options to choose from, given the circumstances.

I could't believe when I saw the window stickers and it said, "No AFM", $50 credit and no "Auto-Start/Stop" - $50 credit. Now, I would probably pay $500 extra to not have these annoying features in a vehicle but I agree with you, $50 is just a silly number to list.

I saw a Silverado that said "no HD Radio" $50 credit as well.

I see it a little different. Yes, the customer is losing out on an order that was accepted. But... They are being told "We can't build the vehicle you ordered, so we're refunding your money. If you are still interested, please place your order again for the current model year."

Now... The current model year may have a feature or two missing, but you're placing your order knowing that. And, there's likely more detail being provided to the dealerships (whether or not that makes to ANY consumers is suspect), which sort of means that Ford -is- being honest. The bigger issue is the honesty of the dealership network...

Many who had planned to get the 2020 C8 ended up with 2021 because of all the issue that occurred in 2019 and early 2020. The worker strike, Covid, then the chip shortage. I had a buddy order a 2021 and ended up finally getting his a month ago and it was a 2022. Took him 10 months to get his.
