I assume it's not a hard change. But I have read getting the air out of the system is the biggest challenge. Some have to vacuum the air out. If you are stock. Let the dealer do it for free. Under warranty.

That’s right !! This car has a sealed cooling system from the factory. The Hellcat is an easy swap, that system is not sealed.

How the hell can I swindle the dealership into believeing the stock thermostat is bad?

You should be getting a trouble code P0128 or P0118 ECT.if the thermostat is stuck open. This is monitored by the Pcm.Should be a warranty job,if you trust your dealer

My thermostat isn’t stuck open.

I’m just looking to swap the stock one for a lower temperature one.

You realize this will not lower engine temps by installing a lower thermostat only. You will require a tune for the fan to come on at a lower temp to allow for lower engine temps. If you just install a thermostat only it will open at a lower temp but the engine temp will still rise to the normal temp until the fan comes on. Installing a thermostat only does very little by itself to lower engine temps.

Yeo, I knew that. I know the fans are still controlled by the computer and that I run the risk of burning the motors on the fans since they would be coming on more often with the lower thermostat.

I was interested since running coolant through the engine at a lower heat threshold still provides some benefit.

On my Hellcat swapping the thermostat is a breeze I was curious to see how hard it would be on the Chevy.

But Like you said, a lower temperature thermostat is not a significant difference until the tune is modified. I’ll jus wait till I decide to not care about warranty anymore.

^^^This. Until you add a pulley which will generate more heat by spinning the supercharger faster, which would require a tune anyway, no need to switch to a cooler thermostat

I posted it in another thread but I think here is it better although I don’t have an ZL1.
So, the next season is coming and I’m thinking of changing the thermostat but is it really worth it for a normal 2SS? And can every stealer make the fan tune?

The stock thermostat is built in to the housing, this is why there aren’t many options. What I did was change the housing to the Billit LS3 style which allows for drop in Thermostats and a ton more options.

I’m currently running a Lingenfelter 160 with my fan programmed to come on at 177 @ 20% duty cycle. At 185 it’s 50% and at 190 it’s 90%.

In traffic on hot days I’ll see around 185 and while rolling above 30 it drops to closer to 170-175 but I’m also running a large C&R Racing Radiator.

On track temps hover around 210-215 under load (800+ bhp) but more importantly since the oil is cooled by the engine coolant, my temps stay closer to 240 rather than the 280+ when I was stock.

I hope this info helps
