Demon rearend failures
The Dodge Demon is experiencing some rear end failures that are needing investigation. Every chain has a weak link and this may just be the one thing to bring down the Demon.

Neither on stock validated tires. Wonder if at stock power levels. Not making excuses wonder how close what was validated is to the edge of what the system can take. Neat (except for the owners) footage...

The article says at least one of those 2 cars was modified to 1100 hp so one had nothing to do with the car and everything to do with "racing breaks stuff."
If both cars were stock then there'd be reason for concern. Each MFR has gotta draw the line somewhere and something is always going to be the weak link, and it looks like they found the Demon's limit at 1100hp. It's a bummer a CV-joint, half-shaft or driveshaft isn't the weak link ... those diffs look pricy! |

As the article notes, of the four failures, 3 of them were on stock Demon cars and 1 modified car. Of course their concern is with the 3 stock ones that did detonate.
"Crucially, the event was produced by a drag strip surface prep company called Mass Traction, which also supervised track maintenance for Fiat-Chrysler during the Demon's development and knows how to maximize grip for the car." This seems concerning to me, as Dodge would have been aware of the potential to detonate the rearend during testing with the track maintenance people. You have to wonder if this issue came up during testing, because 3 stock Demons failed.

This. Call me when the rear ends of stock and unmodified cars start breaking. I have a hard time believing that they would design this car with a weak rear end.

The videos on youtube of them exploding in slow motion are quite entertaining.

Easy fix though, just beef up the rear end by Dodge. Those could be still under warranty.

Hey I agree, in 51 years of drag racing I've broken so much stuff it would make your head spin. I had a Dana 60 in a drag car back in the 80's and couldn't break it. Maybe they should try one of those. Haha

Or a 9" Ford. 1100 hp/tq is a tough load on a IRS rear end. I'm surprised it handles this much, but I guess modern nannies make a big difference in longevity.

The all aluminum housings that dodge uses concerns me. Glad to see our cars have an iron housing.

Nothing new. I heard of this on stock cars about a year ago.

The Demon community is pretty tight knit. A friend of mine bought and sold a Demon and knows a few of the guys who experienced failures. Also knows the mass traction folks.
He said so far Dodge isn't giving them a hard time about replacement (modified car excepted). At least one of them did some pretty substantial damage to other components when it blew and Dodge is replacing them without too many questions. I might be wrong, but I think one of the stock cars might have even had the stock (non racing gas) tune. I could be confusing that last bit though.
