CAI Inc Filter recharge/reoil

Yesterday I pulled the extra filter out of the closet, Cleaned it, shook the excess water out, let it set for an hour or two so it could dry...then tried to re oil the filter. I let it set for about two hours in a shady part of the garage as I ran some errands and the oil was still coming off on my hands when I touched the filter.

The instructions off the CAI Inc website are pasted below...thought I followed them to a tee. When I was spraying the oil, I held the filter by the tube inlet hole with the metal seam facing up so I could gage my progress as I sprayed the filter. I sprayed about two full sprays along the length of the filter (from the inlet hole to the cap), turned the filter about a quarter turn, two more sprays, turn filter, etc.

I rinsed/ cleaned the filter again this morning as it was still over oiled. It's currently sitting in a cool, shady corner of the garage and will leave it there while I run errands to try again this week.

Did I no lt let it dry long enough before applying the oil?

Any suggestions?

"Step 6. Oil – Once dry, apply the supplied CAI Inc. oil solution to the outside of the filter media using 1 spray for every 2 square inches of filter media. DO NOT OVER OIL

Step 7. Dry – Allow oiled filter to dry for 30 minutes so that oil can soak into and “recharge” the filter media. You should be able to handle the filter without the oil coming off on your hands, once this is the case your filter is ready to be reinstalled."

To much oil will damage your maf. I'd wash it again use less oil spray.

Kenny - Is there a particular method that you use?

I just start by not pointing directly at the filter, use a sweeping motion over the filter 10-12 inches away, and rotate the filter 20 percent or so and do it again. The oil will soak in so I don't use much overlap . A little goes a long way. It seems that if I pionted right at it ,I would get to much oil in that area, so I started spraying not directly at the filter and sweep past the filter lightly. Good luck!

Well, I decided to let the filter sit overnight to ensure it was completely dry from the rinse process. Will attempt another oil application tonight.

Not sure it would damage it or not, would just make you have to clean the filament off with maf cleaner and probably throw a code

Well, I oiled the filter. Spraying as per directed by Kenny and it's been sitting for about 2 hours. I just put my hand on the filter and this is what it looks like...

What do you all think...try a third time???

At work we always say, 'third times the charm', try backing off a little father with the sprayer. And increase the speed with the sweeping motion. Remember, less is more. Good luck!

You also might want to let the filter dry 100% before applying oil. If the filter media is saturated by water still - or even just damp - the oil won't soak in.

And realistically, a little extra oil is no big deal. As long as it isn't dripping off the filter it should be fine. If the MAF gets oil on it, it *might* throw a code, which is easily remedied by a spray or two of MAF cleaner

I just did this last week. I used K&N Filter cleaner and oil.

Saturated the OUSIDE of the filter in the cleaner, then used my kitchen faucet doodad and sprayed from the INSIDE OUT, so water inside the filter, to the outside, to clear the major debris and dirt. Dont spray outside in. That doesnt help anyone!

Then let it air dry.

Then a light even coat of your oil of choice, and install!

Derek - That's exactly what I did as well. Rinsed the filter from the inside out.

Welp, guess I'll be cleaning it a 3rd time LOL

You might even want to take a hair drier to it to speed up the drying process and make to make sure she's good and dry, never did that but just a thought.
