This depends on the HP goal you have...

If you are going big, really big, then you'll need rods, pistons and a crank shaft...

The LS-3 crank is supposedly good for around 750 HP from what I've heard... Please do not quote me on that...

If you are going that far into the block, I would recommend a forged crank as well.... A little more now saves a lot later...broken cranks are catastrophic on the rest of the motor, and beyond...

If you are going into the block for big power, I would also recommend sleeving the cylinders.... You can go a lot higher on pressures than you can with the factory cylinders, and you can pretty much choose the cubic inches with a stroker crank and rods...

My block is a fully forged, balanced and blue printed shortblock... and it is rated for around 1100 HP.... Thats only a rating though... There are a few exact same block configurations out there that are running SUBSTANTIALLY more HP than that... and I have every intention of pushing mine to and beyond the rated HP... 1100 is the crankshaft rating... I'm going for more than that at the wheels at some point... It won't stay there all the time, but for events like the Texas Standing Mile.... where I intend on going 200, we'll crank the boost, the timing and the fuel... and see what we see.... My builder and I are talking about building a small fuel tank to use for racing gas for times like that...

I was kinda shooting for a 800rwhp, and keeping the stock crankshaft, installing forged pistons and rods. but don't know if thats all i would need.

What about on the stock LS3 crank??? does it make sense to go with LS9 rods and pistons?
You've got to think in terms of the weakest link, imo.

If you're looking to go bulletproof - plan on upgrading everything just because. If you replace the rods and pistons, then you're going to risk snapping the crank should anything ever happen...or if you replace just the pistons and crank, the rods are now at risk.

I've read the LS9 and LSA heads are eerily similar and designed specifically for the OEM forced induction applications with vanes cast in there to manipulate airflow...

at 700rwhp...if you're looking for bulletproof...I'd focus on the rotating assembly, bolts/gaskets, and leave the stock heads on there. Port'em if you like...but spend the money on the internals. On a related note...what if you replaced the LS3 crank with a forged unit from somewhere and then popped the LS9 pistons and rods in there....

I guess that's the crux right there... What makes sense to upgrade for an FI motor to be reasonably bullet proof at 700 RWHP or 800 ish BHP..

And would it make sense to go with LS9 internals or are there more cost effective options out there.

GTAHIT,
Are aware that the LS9 and LSA use 9 bolts on the crank instead of the traditional 6?

Be sure you won't need to find a flywheel at the late hour of install..........

I prefer a really good forged assembly if I could afford it.... or any other mod.

Here is the ultimate set up. Built 427 with ported LS9 heads. This winning combination should easily make 700-800 rwhp all day long and last for years with a maggie sitting on top for much less then an LS9. This is very similar to what I went with and I believe it is much better then an LS9. With the bigger cubes you dont need to push it as hard and I can still get great fuel economy. http://www.lingenfelter.com/mm5/merc...Store_Code=LPE

Yes and no core charge.

Machine work included in base engine
• All internal parts de-burred, hand washed & inspected
• Pistons, pins and connecting rods are pin fit
• Crankshafts - computer balanced to .2 grams per inch
• Chamfered oil holes & bearing surfaces micro polished
• Cylinder Block align hone checked / machined
• Precision honed on a Rottler HP6 with torque plates
• Hand de-burred, bolt holes are checked and re-tapped
• Professional assembly & blueprinting

Lingenfelter Precision built custom engine assemblies for street and race applications can be ordered with many additional components and features. You can select specific options to make your engine assembly exactly as you need it.

Base price engines prices include new LS7 block so no core charge is added to this package price. Crankshaft included is not for ZO6 dry sump applications. ZO6 crankshaft price will be slightly higher. Shipping will be freight collect via least expensive way.
