a hci LT1 car will have no trouble handling a stock ZL1 with regard to acceleration. ZL1s are cool but if it's speed you're looking for, $55k will open a lot of doors.

Some insurance offers “modification coverage”. Worth it? I have no idea.

I bought an 18 ss with 7 k on it in late 19. My first Camaro. In the fall I sold it for a 2 k loss and ordered a 21 ZL1 that came in the spring of Covid shutdown. Best trade ever. My palms still sweat when I get in that thing. It’s a true beast compared to the ss, go for it !

There is much more to a ZL1 than just the SC. It has the supporting components to compliment the hp. By the way I get about 21-23 mpg on long trips.

I just bought a 19' ZL1 in April and am about to drive it from FL to MICH and figure about 22 mpg for the 1200 mile trip.

I did a 1K mile round trip last year & calculated was 23-24mpg running 70-80mph for most of it. |

I took out $10k additional coverage, which isn't enough to cover all of my mods, but was all my insurance company (Safeco) would allow. On the posotive side, It was very inexpensive.

That doesn't sound right for a road trip on cruise control. I get a reliable, hand calculated 20mpg on a road trip on e60. Latest check was on the way home from Camarofest. I got 20mpg right on the money on e60 with the cruise set on 80mph. Mixed driving gets me 14 - 15 mpg

I averaged 26mpg the night I brought The Mistress home at 60-70 MPH across the state on SR70. Being the first 200ish miles on the car, there was no cruise control and healthy gear shifting to vary rpms. Top up most of the time due to a bit of evening rain, and my then 8yr old not thrilled with the hours long surplus of fresh air in back seat.
I've averaged about 14-16 in spirited driving during the 4 years since. |

M6 ZL1 vert is something I’d be looking for next. The LT4 can just handle more power reliably. I doubt I would ever boost my SS, there is just no point.

It's easy to go down the rabbit hole of chasing more power. The best part about the ZL1 is that it's exceptionally well built to handle the advertised 650hp with a warranty. If you don't care about warranty then mod the SS.
You can take a SS to about 650-700whp pretty comfortably if the setup is right...proper tune and high octane fuel. A ZL1 is pretty stout to 8-850whp until the thrust bearing starts to tap out from the stress of a belt driven supercharger pulling on the crank. At that point it's switch to Turbos or tear it apart and address the bearings. Either way above 700whp is where traction issues become a thing below 50 mph even with drag packs on a unprepped surface.

KingLT1 is right, as always.
My SS is pretty much at the bottom of the rabbit hole, it's the fastest that would ever make sense or what the powertrain can handle long term. It's az amazing, near perfect Jekyll and Hyde car with Ted Jannetty's tune, so this is clearly a viable path. If I started from scratch (and it were still 2018), I think I would do the same, get a 2SS and gradually add power until it's no longer reasonable. That said, the ZL1 is an absolutely fantastic car, already has much more performance out of the box, its frontend looks more menacing, plus it sports a higher upgrade potential without making it un-streetable. What I'm saying is that you won't go horrendously wrong either way, just need to decide what makes the most financial sense—and, which is even more important, what you really want deep inside, because if you rationalize anything else, you'll regret it in the end.
