Hook me up! TRACTION
Hello yall!
I have a 2017 ZL1 and I just can't get it to hook. Not only does it not hook, it gets straight squirrely. My last car for reference was an LSA Supercharged 6.0 G8. I ran a 305/35/19 Nitto NT05R on the vehicle. It made 726rwhp and chirped the tires into 3rd, but put the power down really well for the pig that it was. I know I have shit tires on the car now. I bought it with the plain jane Nitto NT05 in a 305/30/20 and they are just flat dangerous lol. My question is should I run a Toyo 888R? I hear they are loud but hook up quite well. Should I run a 17x10 drag pack on a sticky tire? Has anyone had any luck with other setups? For reference the car makes 688rwhp/710ft with RF BigGulp, NW 103TB, CSP 2' headers all the way back, meth. PFA, thank you! |

Disconnect 2 spark plug wires. Traction issue resolved. You're welcome!

The conclusion from high horsepower folks here (not me but those near or past 4-digit hp levels) is that the Nitto 555RII is the best tradeoff with maximum dry traction that still preserves "normal" drivability in terms of noise and wet weather behavior.

I did a bunch of BMR rear suspension stuff and my car stays pretty straight now. Still on stock tires, but I'm also at stock power level.

I previously had the NT05s on 20x11 in the rear. They were not great. Now I have the NT555R2 in 17x10 and traction is much better. 1st gear and 2nd gear will spin at WOT on the street no matter what. 3rd is dicey. A 60-punch on the street when its HOT is doable, but still need caution. I wouldnt do that if it was below 80 degrees and/or pavement not HOT.
At this power level, i dont know that any tire is going to be great but ive never tired the 888R. The more mods i add, it doesnt get any faster on the steet, it just makes more gears unusable. The NT555R made a huge difference at the track though compared to the NT05s. I wouldnt want to run the 17x10 if i was taking hard corners though. So it probably depends on what you are after.

I too would suggest the BMR cradle lock out along with whatever tire you decide on. The lockout takes a few hours to instally if you have the ability and it cleans up the rear end behavior A LOT.

UberTong... My quest for traction led me to install ALL of the rear end BMR stuff minus the sway bar... and YES, that along with a proper alignment REALLY helps the car plant, and track straight! Well worth the investment. As far as traction goes, i was skeptical that the R888R's would hook in 2nd, with my torque level, but i can say on most streets, with heat in the tires, spins slightly, then hooks by the top of 2nd gear...
Bad roads, or cold tires clearly dont hook even in 3rd... I went the MAX size on the rears for an extra 1" of width and I would NOT change a thing. The noise does not bother me, perhaps because the tires are competing with the over-driven blower and exhaust. Hope that helps.

That said, a little searching does go a long way. There are many posts about this from this year even. Certainly not required. You can do the forum however you choose.
