Key lock cylinder removal - 76 Camaro
I've pulled the steering wheel, hug, turn signal and hazard levers/knobs and the turn signal aparatus with the 3 screws.
I just can't get the key cylinder out. Is the tab to depress with a small scew driver basically the end of the rod that runs down the steering column under the dash and hooks into the ignition switch interrupter? I've even tried an ice pick in the hole where the screw goes to mount the turn signal lever. I have to be doing something wrong! Please help!! Derek It does have tilt steering. Basically, you can start the car, but the key stays in the "Run" "Accessories On" position. And the chrome/silver outer piece around the key cylinder can just turn 360 degrees and keep going. Ok, measure in (toward the center of the steering column) from the chrome ring flange (where you insert the key) 1-7/8 inch. That is where the release tab is. If you have the ignition switch in the OFF position the release tab lines up with the small hashmark cast into the chrome ring flange. The tab is only about 3/8" wide and needs to be pushed in about 1/8" to release. I have had times where the aluminum casting flash covered over the tab but if you follow the measurements it is there.
Sorry I don't have any pics but it's been a looooong time since I've done this. I did find an ignition switch in my basement to measure though! |
