Great gas mileage-Thank you Lord, or GM

I have had the car for exactly one year but yesterday was it's first long trip, (LA to San Franciso)). I have been getting 11 or 12 mpg around LA as I always drive in sport and use the tip shift. (It's an SS with AT). Yesterday using drive, and cruise set at 78 for about 400 miles I got almost 21mpg. Used the odometer/gas pump calc, not the DIC as I forgot to re-set it.

Agreed. I drove 900 miles yesterday and got 24-25mpg at an average speed of 70mph-ish. I was shocked.

They do get surprsingly good mileage on the highway. I drove from Orlando to Knoxville, TN almost 700 miles. Got about 23mpg with cruise control on 78mph.

What I don't understand is with the 4 cyl running at cruize...why it doesn't get better.

I had a 2000 SS with the LS-1 engine (350) aluminum block/heads. Only mod was skip shift and CAI/Borla Cat Back. Drove from TX to VA at 75, A/C on and in cruise....31 mpg.

Yeah, 3,600 lbs helps that out a lot. The LS1 was and still is a great engine.

My exact question, why doesn't the L99 with AFM, get better mileage, the best I have gotten is 21.9 on trip to myrtle beach from KY.

The drag coefficient helps too. The 5th gens are as slippery as a Tahoe, which is hindering there mileage.

aerodynamics play a major part in MPG

Currently driving from Wichita, KS to Seattle and have been getting around 400 miles to each tank and been averaging around 25 to 26 MPG. Cruising around 78 MPH. Getting better fuel mileage than my 1998 Grand Prix ever does.

Several little things all combined.

1. The 5th gens are much bigger than the 4th gen, both dimensionally (bigger hole in the wind) and weight.

2. Gas laced with 10% ethanol has become much more common in just the last couple of years. Pure gas vs. E10 can be 2 mpg or more on its own depending on how the car's computer reacts to it.

3. Things like how broken in the engine is, and even how worn the tires are affect fuel mileage. (Older, more worn tires will have significantly lower rolling resistance than new ones).

4. On the drive from TX to VA, you probably had a tail wind, as the wind blows from west to east much more often than east to west.

I had a supervisors meeting Friday 80 miles away. Average speed ranged between 75-80 and I got 26.3 mpg.

A couple months ago I had to take another trip of over 400 miles for work and got 25.9 mpg on that trip.

I have the L99.
