How is top speed reached in 5th gear? (LS3)

I forget exactly how it came up, but I was talking with my friend today and he mentioned how he thought it was funny that the top speed in our cars is reached in 5th gear, but can't be reached in 6th. I just sort of nodded and hoped he couldn't read my mind (pure confusion). Is this even true? Intuitively, the top gear would be the one to reach the top speed, but maybe the ratio in 6th is so low that it can't functionally use the HP needed to get there? That's my only confused explanation. Thanks!

Granny shifting! You can hit 160 in 4th. Source: internet and personal experience. I think 6th mathematically goes to 288 or something so you'll never hit that speed. Not sure what 5th goes to but it's lower than 6th.

In the absence of speed limiters and the spectre of death, the top speed of a Camaro would be reached at a point that enables the engine to be delivering maximum power at the lowest gear ratio to overcome aerodynamic and friction losses.

Have fun.

6th is an overdrive designed for MPG's. you probably would loose a bit of power going from 5th to 6th

I like sixth because it just quiets things down on the highway and that big V8 just lopes along with all the torque. Then you can just shift to fourth to blast out there when you want to.

Top speed is reached in 5th gear, 178 or there abouts, 6th is too tall and usually tops out around 145.

this...6th gear is overdrive and it doesnt have the power to overcome air resistance to reach topspeed. Moreso meant for MPG. And also like it was said before with the speed limiter at 155 top speed can be reached in 4th

Do you have a tune? In any stock Camaro the DIC/HUD will say "Speed Limiter Reached" or something like that at 155. I could always go 156 for some reason though.

will a dyno tune allow you to bypass the speed limiter?

You guys realize that 5th is also an overdrive gear, right?
