New 0w40 Mobil 1 Track Day Results!!!

First event on the new 0W40 dexos 2 Mobil 1. Here are the temps from my final session on Sunday. Car had similar temps all weekend. This was a 2 day event @ Road Atlanta in the HPDE 3 run group. Ambient Temps were a scorching 95* all weekend.

first event on anything other than the Motul 8100 X-Clean 5w40 Dexos 2. I have data from another Road Atlanta event with Motul that I'll try to post, but it was much cooler that day!

Side note for any of you/us IOS users. I was able to use Bootcamp and create another partition and load Win10 in there. Uploaded Cosworth Toolbox... works great!

Curious why you went to 0w from 5w. I was under the impression 0w is better for cooler climates, but i might have that backwards. I just ordered the Valvoline 5w40 dexos 2 since it was cheap on amazon, but have never been a valvoline user.

I’m in FL, so similar current climate. Thanks!!

Sure did. My OCD wouldn’t have tolerated the old cap well.

The 0w and 5w part indicates the oil properties when cool/cold. Essentially these properties only apply upon cold start up. The 40 part is what the car is experiencing when up to operating temps.

I’m running this new 0w40 because it was specifically formulated for GM LT1/LT4 engines to provide daily drivability along with proper track protection. The Motul 5w40 I ran, likely had some additives in it that weren’t great for Cat converters. Hence why GM only recommended those oils to be track only oils. I daily drove on the Motul anyway and had a cat converter replaced under warranty around 18k miles. Probably why this new oil say emissions systems protection on the bottle.

Where did you get the new Mobil 1 0W-40?

And what new cap are you talking about?

Sorry if the answers have already been posted. I have been waiting for the new Mobil 1 oil to become available.

MJK: BOTH 0w40 and 5w40 dexos 2 oils have been certified by GM as good for BOTH street and track duty. 5w40 dexos 2 is NOT track ONLY oil! 15w50 is.

Moreover id argue that 5w40 is a much better summer oil to provide motor protection during hot summer vs cold winter starts. Especially in hot climates.

IMO there is nothing "magical" about the Mobil 1 0w40 except it now gives GM dealers ability to service GM performance cars with dexos 2 oil vs old 5w30 which was street only. Thats it!

Where do you get a notion that Motul has some additives that are cats unfriendly???

I think folks are reading way too much into this GM ***dealers*** marketing release and jumping to huge conclusions based on unjustified assumptions.

NB Corvette Racing team uses Mobil 1, Valvoline and Motul as their choices for lubricants. All three are top notch companies. And all 3 make GM certified top quality dexos 2 oils! And THAT is what GM recommends to be used in our cars in either 0 or 5w40 spec.

I ran the Valvoline MST 5-40 the other day and oil temps stayed below 280. I don't think there will be drastic temperature changes because a lot of that depends on the oil cooling system.

I ran it all season last year incl very hot and humid days and temp was never an issue.

Having said that, i applaud GM for finally going for a higher rating hot temp oil as std factory and dealer fills, as prior 5w30 would likely be marginal if somebody didnt track the car yet beat on it hard as a street driver.
0w40 also covers ALL climates incl cold winter because of its cold start rating. But there is no doubt imo that 5w vs 0w is better for non winter starts. As every oil spec definition would suggest.

Perfect answer. Covers it all.

The answer may be better found elsewhere, but I wonder if GM would prefer this to the 15w50 required for the LT4 engine now. I've read the updates about this being the new motoroil used in Corvette's and (Camaros?), but nothing that really mentions track usage, especially with the 1LE where the manual states 15w50.
