For people who wonder how they steal our cars.

Granted, this is shown working on a RR but the idea is the same for when they just bust the window and then take off a fre minutes later.

Problem with the factory alarm not having a glass break sensor. And once you get access to the CAN bus being able to quickly program a new key. Some Dodges( though I'm not sure I wouldn't be surprised if this also worked on the Camaro) you can pull/break a headlight and accomplish the same as you can tap into the CAN bus there too

Every time I see stuff like this I get to thinking I should just pull the fuel pump relay every time I park and bring it into the store, restaurant, stadium, or office with me.

Security check at the stadium - please empty your pockets…… keys, wallet, phone, change…… relay.

Newer headlamps are on the can bus with a module on the headlamp. Have to do a bit more than break the lens, but you can get to the module.

I don't think I want to go with something that disconnects power on a regular basis. Can be troublesome enough when only on occasion. Daily? Multiple times a day? Can't be a good thing to do to modern electronics.

There is quite a thread on this, theft prevention, many excellent ideas that do not disrupt power to the systems. Juts my thoughts....

I had my 2020 2SS stolen Monday morning in South Jersey. They broke my passenger window and took off without anyone's ring camera detecting it.

Yea, there were a lot of suggestions of:
1. Drive a manual
2. Hide your key fob signal
3. Arm yourself
4. Get a detachable wheel-LOL
5. Or airtag for when's it's already stolen

You don't have to use the battery disconnect everyday. But I'd use rather use this disconnect at a hotel then "hope" my car being manual or my hidden fob signal deters the thief.

Great article!

Still truly amazes me these systems were developed with little to no security in mind in this day and age.

Security costs money. All companies view security as an expense. Learned this while working on my M.S. in Cybersecurity.

They only care when the cost of repair is more than the cost of prevention.

Let be honest, though, sactownbwoy, full security and full usability are at the opposite ends of a spectrum, and everyone's view of the "ideal position" along this spectrum is different. I for one am not a fan of extremely tight security, because it adds a ton of cost and friction with little to no value (in terms of usability).

Of course, I do understand the necessity and consider security in everything I do, but there is no denying that it's an overhead, and if I had my way, I would lean strongly towards deterrents instead of attempting to anticipate and defend against every single attack vector.

Yes, those are comical....I meant relay removals, hidden ODB ports, etc. The more delays and trouble it is, the more likely they go elsewhere.
The one time I had to disconnect my battery, between windows needing to recalibrate, and other inconveniences it causes, just not worth it to me.

Oh, you forgot to mention the "keep a rattlesnake in the car" suggestion, one of my favorites!
