what make and model of router and cable modem do you have?

Keep in mind that I’m not touting it. Rather that going wired greatly improved my situation.

I'm looking for something to replace my xfinity gateway router that's costing me $20 a month
Recommendations would be appreciated. I don't play video games but stream all video with YouTube TV.

Side note, it's crazy to me that some ISPs still charge for that if they can. I get 1GB fiber here in Las Vegas for $65/month, and the router is free.

Do you need a modem and router build in, or do you have a separate router for wifi already?

Nothing really special about Modems, unless you have Gigabyte connection. Otherwise, hit Amazon/WalMart/Best Buy and the modem box will say on it "Xfinity/Cox/Spectrum/etc.". Setting up the modem should take about 5 minutes, that includes connecting it. I have xfinity and when I installed a new modem, you just go to an xfinity website and it loads the MAC address automatically and you are all set. I didn't have to call anyone or sit on the phone waiting for a "representative".

Motorola and Netgear are pretty good cable modems.

Sorry I meant to write router.

Ugh, that CenturyLink stuff is definitely lower tier (IMO) modems/routers. You could really do better with upgrading that equipment. For some reason, their wifi signals are not that strong and get a lot of interference, most likely what you are seeing/experiencing. If you are in a one story ranch style house, it may have the strength from one end to the other, but if you are in a multilevel house, probably really struggling with wifi.

For sure , below average gear. One thing I didn’t mention is that I have to use a work vpn which slows speed down by roughly 30%. My kid games wirelessly no problem, no vpn though.

Like I mentioned earlier, I think Asus is making some quality routers right now. They have several models depending on the speed of your internet. You really want to look at if you want wifi 6 going forward (newest technology in router capabilities). The asus AX series has that, if not, the AC series is still very strong. All their routers are backward compatible.

an Asus AX1800 has wifi 6, dual band, speed for streaming and gaming for $100.

Lastly at night we just unplug the router.
Went from WiFi to a 4 port wired hub for the TV/PlayStation and it made a world of difference.
