Grille Question

The SEMA style grill in the attached picture has two flat parts circled in blue that can be fixed in place by screws on the inner ends of the grille, cutting airflow down significantly.

Why and are these pieces necessary to protect cooling fins or other parts?

They aren't on my stock 50th Anniversary 2SS. But, I have seen them on others and I don't know what determines there use. IMO better looking without, I wouldn't use them.

Taking a wild guess here. I would say they block the brake cooling duct so you don't trash the system while you are driving on the streets.

Those ducts are open using the standard grille too. Are they for cars that don't have the ducts/radiators?

I guess someone could put an SS bumper on a non-SS car?

If I remember right they're for the convertibles that don't have the auxiliary coolers.

It’s for the auxiliary coolers. I just installed my sema grille myself about a couple months ago and didn’t install the deflectors. The coupes come with 2 auxiliary coolers and air tunnels that lead to the brakes. The Convertibles don’t have either of the two hence why the deflectors come with the kit.

Grille

Thanks for the responses and I can see the reasoning . . . and the deflectors going to my scrap plastics pile.

My 2018 Redline SS came with the SEMA grill. It had these two deflectors installed. I removed them. They block easy air flow to the auxiliary coolers. Mine was the only one I saw with them on. I met someone at a car show who had also a 2018 redline SS and his did not have them. I definitely removed.
