1st Oil Change - Dealership Says it's too early?

I scheduled an appointment for my first oil change and my wife was going to take it down (65 miles away) for me (I work nights). When she got there the service manager told her the oil change was completely unnecessary as there's only 2300 miles on the car and they recommend waiting between 5000 & 7500. They turned her away and now she made the 130+ miles round trip with no oil change....

I've read everywhere here people change their oil the first time at 1500 miles and thought I was running a little late. Would you still recommend changing the oil or wait as the dealership recommends?

The only reason for changing the oil early on the first oil change is to get rid of the break-in stuff. If the dealer won't do it, just do it yourself. It's really easy.

I certainly will. I was just amazed that they practically refused to do it.

There is no "break-in stuff". Follow the intervals in your manual or wait for the DIC to tell you when to change the oil. If GM is confident enough to offer a 5/100 powertrain warranty following those intervals, it should be good enough for the rest of us.

To add to that, one of the C5 members did some extensive testing on the factory oil and found that there was little deterioration even when it was due for a change per the DIC.

The folks that preach early oil changes are about 10 years behind on their oil chemistry knowledge. Save your cash; buy some mods.

You're safe doing the GM 5k oil changes at the earliest.

Of course, there's no harm in changing the oil with fresh oil at any early interval. It just costs money.

Toyota dealership tried this with me. Van had 3k at 6 months. They said the minimum they do it is 12 months or 10k miles. I said here is my free oil change coupon, please change the oil. They finally did. I have done the oil changes since.

I'm surprised they didn't change it. Waiting isn't an issue like stated above. Some just like and get a warm fuzzy changing it out early.

I received two years of free oil changes when I bought my 2012, took mine in at 3,000 miles, no problems oil changed in about 45 minutes. Surprised they didn't take your money

I wanted to pay my dealer to change the oil at 3,500 miles and they turned me away. Told me same thing - 7,500 mile oil change is earliest for an SS.

So I went to another dealer, bought an AC oil filter, went to Walmart and bought 2 gallons of Mobil One 5-30, and changed it myself. I felt better and did drain some metal particles that remained from manufacturing.

I've used the dealer to change my oil every 7,500 miles ever since; I still have the waste oil from the oil change in my garage and don't want to risk staining my trunk area with an accidental waste oil spill.

My dealer charges $69.95 for oil change w/ Mobil One for an SS.
