Question Annoying Buzz

This may have been going on for a while on my SS, but since it is now the time of year for the windows to be down. I have noticed a vibration or a buzz that seems to be coming from the rear quarter panel. It occurs at about 1100 rpm when the engine is under a load. Once the engine is above 1100 rpm, it dissapears, but it is very annoying and it is a lot louder ouside the car than inside. Because the car has so much torque, I seem to be in that rpm band very frequently on the highway in sixth gear or in the neighborhood in third gear. Since it only occurs when the car is under a load, you can't replicate it when the car is sitting still. It shouldn't be doing this and I am sure it sounds like crap as I am going down the road.

Any suggestions??? Thanks.

Sounds like you may have a baffle loose in the exhaust - OR - something else loose on the exhaust system (hanger) -- take it into your dealer and they can fix it or replace it for you.......

Thanks. This is one of those issues that I had visions of it being the mystery noise forever.

I just wanted to get an update on all of you having this issue. Have your respecitve dealers been able to resolve these issues for you or are you still experiencing the concern? Thank you for your time.

I first noticed it on my SS just over the 8,000 mile point. I finally called the service rep around 9,000 miles to tell him my muffler baffles were loose & vibrating (he knew exactly what I was talking about by the way). Biggest hassle was finding the time to take it in (dealership is across town) so a tech could "verify" before they ordered the exhaust and then having to wait almost 2 weeks for the exhaust to actually come in.

Other than the drive time there & back it didn't take too much of my time. 10 minutes for them to break a tech free so he could smack the exhaust & say "Yup, it's bad", and then once the exhaust did come in, less than 1.5 hrs for them to R2 the entire cat-back.

Not Fixed Yet

Went to the dealer on Thursday last week. Was told the sound is "normal" and this is a performance car, I should be willing to tolerate noises. Huh??? Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

That is totally unacceptable. Call GM customer service, or go to another dealership

I did a quick search and came across what's below. With mine you could also hear the rattle/buzz by smacking the bottom of the muffler with the engine warmed up & on OR off. The TSB says "mufflers on vehicles produced before September 15, 2009", but mine was built in late November 2009. If you do in fact have the rattle, I'd PM Chevrolet Customer Svc and I'm sure he can "convince" your dealer to fis the problem.

Subject:Rattle Noise Under Vehicle - May Be Engine RPM Related

Models:2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS

Equipped with 6.2L V8 Engine
Please Refer to GMVIS

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern

Some customers may comment on a rattle noise from under the vehicle. This noise is mostly reported when the vehicle is cold and may go away completely when the engine is warm.
It is possible that the internal baffles may be loose in the mufflers on vehicles produced before September 15, 2009 or the resonators on vehicles built before December 1, 2009.
Recommendations/Instructions

To diagnose loose baffles in either component, use the following method.
  1.
Lift and suitably support the vehicle.
Locate the muffler at the rear of the vehicle. Muffler Rattle Diagnosis Tap Points

  1.
Using a rubber mallet, strike the exhaust pipes in the bend just ahead of the mufflers as shown. If loose baffles are present, you should hear them rattle when tapping with the rubber mallet. Replace the exhaust system to correct this condition. Important: You must only tap on the exhaust pipe at the positions shown. Tapping further away from the mufflers may cause other reverberations that do not indicate a need to replace components.

Locate the resonator at the mid-point of the vehicle. Resonator Rattle Diagnosis Rear Tap Points

Resonator Rattle Diagnosis Front Tap Points

Using a rubber mallet, strike the exhaust pipes both in front of the resonator and behind the resonator as shown. Important: You must only tap on the exhaust pipe at the positions shown. Tapping further away from the resonator may cause other reverberations that do not indicate a need to replace components.
  2. If loose baffles are present, you should hear them rattle when tapping with the rubber mallet. Replace the exhaust system to correct this condition.

Thanks, mine has a build date of 01/10, but I am going to assume this is not a "clean" cut-off date. As far as I am concerned the sound that I am hearing is by no means "normal".

This is correct, I had my exhaust replaced 3 times because of this. The issue has since been resolved.

Exhaust TSB

Jeff:

Is there a TSB on this issue? There is quite a bit posted on this web site and it seems quite a few folks have had this issue. I sent my dealer the PI0027 that was posted here. He asked if it was a GM TSB. He told me that the PI0027 is a "preliminary investigation" I would like this fixed, the noise is unacceptable in a $34,000 car. What do I need to do? Thanks for your help.
