18" Winter wheel options - need advice
Hey everyone,
I have a 2010 2ss/rs which is about to face its first Canadian winter. So, I need to get winter rims and tires to handle the snow and ice. My question is - I have done quite a bit of reading on this but haven't seen a straight answer on the topic. I want to drop to an 18" rim that will fit with no spacers, but is also reasonably inexpensive. Could you please inform me of what wheels will work, front and rear, and where to get them? There is debate about the c6 Z06 front wheels but nothing concrete about fit given that they are (slightly) different bolt patterns. Other options will be appreciated too. I'm not very technically inclined so please be specific.. Please let me know! Thanks |

I too want to know but my fear is fitting over the breaks. But if there is I'd like to know

Unfortunately I don't think anyone on this forum has an answer for the 18" solution. Eighty percent will tell you to buy a winter rat and the rest don't know what snow is. A few people have bought close-outs that are no longer available. I asked a few custom shops and they said they could build me a set for double the regular price. So it looks like if you have the luxury of sizing an eighteen at the place of sale, give it a try. Most likely I will go with the nineteen inch aftermarket alloys for this winter. I am REAL close to cutting off the brake pad weights and try an eighteen tho! Last edited by Al; 09-16-2010 at 07:09 AM. |

ok guys here is the answer i got. I went to discount tire today and they said 18 will work on the ss because of the amount of offset that is built into the rim to clear the calipers. he quoted me a price of 1500.00 for rims tires and installation...so if you are thinking about this and there is a discount tire by you go there that is what im gonna do. 1500.00 is alot cheaper than paying for a winter beater, insurance on another car, maintenence, and possibly costly breakdowns.

because for some reason on the web site and when i talked to a person at tirerack they told me i could not put 18 in rims on the car. the guy i talked to at discount tire told me he has done a few ss camaros with the 18's and because of the offset in the rim it works so i dont know who is really telling the truth.

We are not showing 18 inch are going to clear SS brakes. Cheverolet put stick on weights on the calipers intially to silence brake noise on early models. The later models received a revised pad that has weights on the backing plates see photos below. Its not an offset issue.

I don't have the SS issue, but we worked with Tire Rack last fall for a long time and they were great about finding us 18" tires and rims for our 2LT. Got Pirelli Ice/Snow and drove to work all winter with no problems.

Got these from tire rack last year. I don't have the roller skate weights though.

Sorry to beat a dead horse but winter demands tall sidewalls. If I go the 19" route, Tirerack has rims for $580 a rim?!! You have got to stock cheaper rims than that. Just trying to be loyal is all. . . Thanks for looking into this BTW |

Yes its the weights that keep them from working. If you do not have these then I can get you 18 inch wheels. The only problem we fear in the future when you get the new style pads the 18s would no longer clear. I hope this is helpful information for you guys.
