It said when gas quality was checked the out-of-the-way mom & pop type places had the most problems, especially with premium since a lot of them hardly sold any and it would sit in the tank for months.

Race gas is for race cars, period! Street cars usually have static compression ratios of between 8:1 and upwards of 11:1, and usually in the 9:1 and 10:1 area on most performance "street" engines. The problem running race gas is that if you don't have the compression to compress the fuel and air enough, you'll actually run SLOWER! I see this happen all of the time at the race track where during the Wednesday night drags, people with bone stock cars will go fuel-up with 110 or 114 octane race gas and wonder why they aren't running as quick, or as fast, as usual.

Contrary to popular belief, the more octane in gas, the COOLER and SLOWER the burn is, and more importantly, the more compression is required to get that fuel to release its energy. What happens to regular gas if you have too much compression or too much timing? You ping (detonate). How do you remedy that? You use fuel with a higher octane rating to get that uncontrolled burn back under control.

Chevron 87 for me, it's close and techron is the real deal......when I store the car , it gets 91 to reduce octane # loss.

Chevron

Used to work for them back in the 90's. I know then that the closest Chevron stations to the Detroit area were in Kentucky. The gas was great enough for GM, Ford, and Dodge all 3 to have it trucked up from Kentucky in order to do their emissions testing. Also, most of the additives in other brands of gasoline are just Chevron Techron rebranded. They all buy their additives from Chevron.

I typically use Shell, because that's the best station that's close to me. RaceTrac stations run rampant here, and there are no Exxon/Mobil stations or Chevron stations anywhere near me. There's also a ton of Wawa stations and 7-11 stations in the area.

If not Shell, my second best option around here is probably Costco.

Is Costco gas a top tier brand?

Surprisingly, it is. Plus they burn through their supply pretty quickly, so you are typically always getting fresh gas.

91 Shell (because socal hates 93), and the station has a fuel truck dumping new fuel in daily.

I have filled up 6 times so no real trend to date but twice with 93 Citgo and it is cheaper. I might change stations as the pump takes forever (giving me the hunch that 93 is a slow seller).

Yep, everytime I go by the nearest Costco gas station, there are usually about 6 or 7 cars lined up to get gas on both sides of the pump(s).

There is a Mobil gas station near me that probably has the highest gas prices in California. They charge $4.79 for a gallon of regular. Their gas prices never change.

So the best gas prices for me (Top Tier) when figuring in proximity and price, it would be the local 76, Shell or Chevron station.
