GM Recall - Loss of Power Steering Assist, 2017 Camaro & others
I logged into the My Chevy website and noticed a notification that there is an open recall for my 2017 Camaro 2LT RS as followed:
GM Recall #: N182182760 NHTSA # AWAITING# Date Issued: Feb 07, 2019 Recall Title: Loss of Power Steering Assist Recall Description: General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2016 – 2018 model year Cadillac CTS and 2017 model year Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette, and Cadillac ATS vehicles. These vehicles may experience a loss of electric power steering (“EPS”) assist while driving. Loss of EPS assist may last an entire ignition cycle, but may return once the vehicle is restarted. Customers may experience this condition during subsequent ignition cycles. Safety Risk Description: If power steering assist is lost, manual steering functionality is retained but would require increased steering effort, particularly at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. Repair Description: Dealers will replace the power steering gear assembly. Recall Status: INCOMPLETE. REMEDY NOT YET AVAILABLE My vehicle has a recall, and the status reads: "INCOMPLETE. REMEDY NOT YET AVAILABLE." What do I do next? GM is working quickly to finalize the necessary repair procedures and/or obtain parts. You will be notified via written communication when the repair procedure or parts are available. You can also check back at this website or with your preferred Certified Service Dealer.

I experienced increased effort in steering after a longer drive.
Symptom goes away after restarting the car. https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=473661

I've experienced this as well, restart and it works fine for awhile but it returns and continues to lose power steering at random moments without warning. I noted in another thread, I gave GM absolute hell for this issue. They had tech's flying in to Austin to investigate my car. Took them 2 months before they finally just replaced the entire steering rack... and I also sued them for the down time and failure for addressing the safety related issue. |

interesting, wonder what they changed between 2016 and 2017 that's related to that.
Kinda makes you think of a software bug ...since it happens over time and a reboot fixes it. A rounding error / counter flaw would certainly fit that bill. Though, sensor drift can also do the trick. between the TCM lockdown and this, 2016's are looking to be a good catch compared to the later years. |

I believe what happens is the Steering Gear Motor reports invalid steer torque input causing the system to shut down power steering assist as a failsafe, when you restart the car the steer torque input values are refreshed. |
