Any old computer games on new laptop experts?

Last summer we got a new Dell laptop and my old games didn't work anymore. My girl was able to get Panzer General II to play, but I really enjoyed the sequel, People's General. I have the CD-ROM, but it won't play. For Panzer General II the CD wouldn't work, but she somehow has it playing off the hard drive. I don't even need the disc. Can someone point me in the direction of maybe getting People's General to do the same? Thanks!!!

You may have to right click on the game icon, then select properties and then look for something called compatible mode. Try selecting an older version of Windows.

I tried getting it to run in Windows 98 mode, but the new Windows (8? I know 10 sucked) didn't have it. :(

Though you can try the above, you can also go to www.gog.com where they have a lot of games such as Panzer General 2 that you can buy, and they've set up the install to work on a lot of the newer OS's.

Thanks Steve!

I have Panzer General II working, so I'll see if they have People's General.

I got Close Combat III to work for my Dad on his WIN10 machine. It worked for about a week.

I assume a WIN10 update killed it. I have never understood- nor will I ever- why they even bother to have a compatibility mode. In all my years of using windows starting with 3.1, I have never once had that "option" generate positive results. It simply has never allowed software to work.

I still spend time with combat flight sims and I bought a really slick machine two years ago, with WIN7. I can make sims from 1998 run on it. The PC I'm using to write this message is my 'cheap' machine for internet use, a 300 buck WIN10 machine.

I wonder if I can get Panzer Commander to run on my WIN7 machine.

I have an old Microprose game (Red Storm Rising) that I run on my beastly machine with Windows 7. It uses a program called DOSBox to run the game. Some emulators actually work pretty well for games like this.

I use DOSBox for Street Rod and Wasteland. The problem is People's General is a WIN 98 game. GOG didn't have it. I used to play Red Storm Rising all the time on my Commodore 64c. It had the cool overlay for the keys.

If anyone finds it, please let me know. Thanks Steve & Chris.

Going from Win 8 to 10 caused all kinds of issues, so I think I'm still running 8 on the laptop. I'll have to check.

Or build an ultra cheap system with parts from 1998, get a CRT monitor and be a retro gamer lol
