Ranger and Bronco confirmed for return by 2020

Ford deal with UAW brings back Ranger pickup
USA Today
By Alisa Priddle and Brent Snavely, Detroit Free
November 9, 2015

Quote:
The new-product investments include a commitment by Ford to bring its Ranger midsize pickup back to America and to revive the storied Bronco nameplate. Both would be built at the Michigan Assembly Plant which will stop making the Ford Focus and C-Max families of vehicles there in 2018.

Production of the Bronco is expected to start after the Ranger and no later than 2020, according to a person briefed on the agreement who was not authorized to speak publicly.

The Ranger will enter a revived field of smaller pickups while the Bronco, known to off-roaders from the 1960s, would likely be aimed at the four-wheel-drive, dirt trail-ready market.

Competition has bread the best pony cars ever built. Its elevated full size trucks to levels unheard of. Time for Colorado/Canyon to benefit from a little domestic competition now as well. Here's to the domestic vehicle market.

The new Ford Ranger has been out in select markets overseas for awhile... FMC should'a released it sooner domestically but I guess better late than never.

For example, here's one in Pride Orange and with a 3.2 Turbodiesel :

And another one in Metropolitan Gray...

And even a pre-facelifted one...

Ford basically figured F-150 would be good enough, even for people who didn't need or want an F-series. A lot of those people went to Tacoma and now to Colorado/Canyon.

But like I said, in the long run, Toyota is probably panicking right now. Ironically enough, the Tacoma reeks of last-gen Ranger, it's been withering on the vine with only minor updates for years now. There probably isn't an all-new model scheduled for a few more years out, by then Colorado/Canyon and Ranger will have eaten into Tacoma's market share.

^ Yeah... no brainer. This will cannibalize Taco sales. That's enough explanation right there.

Am I the only one that thinks that looks very similar to the Colorado/Canyon?

If they throw the 2.7L Ecoboost in it, I'll have one in my driveway as soon as its available.

It looks pretty good. Since the State of Florida is insisting on Ford trucks I wouldn't mind if I was issued one.

The Ranger I have right now though... The Ford dealer is searching the country for its 3rd transmission.

I thought the exact same. Ford messed up dropping the Ranger. Now they are playing catch-up.

The examples posted are all Global Ranger. Which currently rides on the T6 platform, along with Ford Everest. T6 debuted in 2010, these new offerings Ranger and Bronco will most likely ride on T6's replacement. Something akin to F-150's frame at 70-80%.

This being the case Bronco's prospects of coming back more in the vein of the 1st gen, '66-'77, are quite high and that idea alone has me a bit giddy. The full size Broncos were ok, but they never seemed to have the same je ne sais quoi. This sizeing would allow it to more directly compete with Wrangler, which has gone too long without direct competition.

I'd imagine Ranger's engine line up would be geared heavily towards fuel economy, to better set Ranger apart from F-150. Perhaps something like:
Base----------------------- 1.6EB I4 -- 197hp/214tq
Top Standard trim-- 2.3EB I4 -- 310hp/320tq
Diesel--------------------- 3.2PS I5 -- 197hp/350tq

A Hi-Po option in the form of the 2.7EB tuned to 370hp/390tq could be done pretty easily I must imagine.
