Anywhere on the hashmarks is fine. Make sure you let all the oil flow back down the dipstick tube before rechecking the fill level (patience is a virtue).

you’re at the low end of the “normal” range.

Question. Was this taken with the car bone-stock-cold, or warm? If that was car cold, for me, I'd be throwing a 1/2qt in considering its at the bottom of the marks. (Granted you will get many different suggestions).

I go with the cold reading normally and like to be 1/2-3/4 on the marks. If the car is warm I always wait 10-15mins then check the stick twice. (Meaning I may pull it, put something over the tube, then insert 10-15mins later)

That was my initial thought but I started second guessing my self.

Doing the esp 0W-40 swap this week just wanted to make sure I wasn’t currently running low.

Also, does anyone know how many quarts under you are when the check oil light comes on?
Seen it once in my SS and never want to see it in my Zl1. Just curious

Car was bone cold. This will be my second oil change since I’ve owned the car. Bought with 2500 miles and changed the oil straight away as I did not trust the previous owner or dealership ( Dave Smith ). It was barely at the bottom of the dipstick and quite dark. I like to think they did the recommended changes but no way of knowing
for sure. I’m at 3,000 currently and going to do another change, swapping to the esp 0W-40

I switched to esp 0w-40 at 1000 miles (currently at 2000 miles).

I'm unable to tell a difference, though I intend to keep putting esp 0w-40 anyway.

I had the dealership do the change and they insisted that I was wasting my money and that the esp 0w-40 was only for the track and that I was supposed to put the regular stuff back in after my track event. They are confused. To be sure I had them show me the bottles to make sure they put the right stuff in. Silly dealer.

Sadly.....had the dipswitches at the dealer seen yours was the 1LE version, they would/should know that the owners manual calls for 15w50 during track and now the 0w-40 is year round for the ZL1 only....not the ZL1/1LE. (Dealers honestly, most are clueless and guessing)

I don't blame the technicians.
I think its an information distribution and training issue.

99% of business is probably from non-Z06, ZL1 & ZL1 1LE cars.
So that's what they're trained on.

The rest is learn-on-the-job.

Sad that we pay more for our car and get less for our service.

True, but...

If they're going to proclaim service for the vehicle, any vehicle, they ought to know what they're doing. No ifs, and or buts.

Agreed, but blame the management.

Well, I've been buying new vehicles for decades. A number of years ago I brought my 12 month old high end truck in for a scheduled simple oil change to the dealership I bought the truck from. The dipstick emptied the oil, changed the filter, replaced the oil plug, and then proceeded to drive my truck to the front. I got 1/2 a mile away before realizing something was amuck. I promptly turned around and returned it, only to find out, the new truck was returned to me with no oil in it. Zero.

The service manager asked me "how did I not know something was wrong?" Bear in mind this was a subzero Wisconsin morning. I wanted to punch the manager square in the jaw, and then continue to pummel him like an illegitimate stepchild. However, I kept my cool and stated "I'm not paid enough to think." In the end they replaced the engine on a 4,000 mile high end truck. This is after six weeks with a loaner and the manger telling me "the engine still runs."

No: if a service tech is certified, and performs incorrectly, he's as much wrong as the management. It's called accountability.

That sucks. "how did you not know something was wrong" as if it was your fault. Wow.

I still blame the manager. It's management's job to make sure the techs stay up to date on knowledge and training. Most likely the tech that forgot to put the oil in your car was forced to work on 4 other cars at the same time because they'd cut costs by letting the other techs go.

Or he made a mistake... It happens.

In any case, it's the management's job to take responsibility/accountability.

angryBits, I wouldn't mind working for you, this mindset is sorely MIA in many a manager
