Thumbs up Shoot a machine gun

It's time for the annual machine gun shoot in Albany, OR. This is a safe family-friendly event.

Pay $10 to get in, then choose what you are interested in (or just watch) and you pay for ammo only. Most tables charge $10-30 per full magazine; depending on caliber. Last year there were over 100 machine guns to choose from; ranging from .22 to 50 caliber Browning. A large selection of suppressed guns were also available to shoot.

May 21 & 22, 9 am to 4 pm.

I wish we had something like that here. While I don't miss carrying the M-60, it was a blast to use. The M-249 was soooooo much lighter, but lacked the "it" factor for me. I never got to shoot the M-2 .50 which I regret. Favorite of all? Mk-19 by far. That was just so damn cool!

I shot a M-249 last year. It was neat. They also had 2 M-2 .50s; one was mounted in a turret on an army truck, and the other was on the standard tripod. Both were available to shoot.

For me, the weird stuff is cooler than the normal guns you can see for sale in most Oregon gun shops. I shot a FN PDW 2 years ago, and put a few rounds through a sawed-off shotgun. Not everything there is full-auto. They did have a WWII flamethrower demo; which shot fire about 60' and lit a bush on fire which burned for half an hour. They also had a helicopter fly over the range and blast the cars with a mounted M-60. They had about 40 pounds of tannerite in them for effect.

Here's some pictures from Saturday morning. I shot 25 rounds of 30-06 through a Browning machine gun mounted on the truck, and 5 rounds of .50 Caliber through a bolt-action sniper rifle. The newbie before me managed to get the scope to smack him in the forehead hard enough to draw blood. I don't know how he managed, as the eye relief was at least 4". The nearby .50 was creating quite the windstorm on me from the muzzle brake.

This event continues today, and all day Sunday.
