CAI

I have a 2013 1SS. I was wondering does a CAI really make that much of a difference? I've put a Dynomax axle back exhaust on it and a high flow dry air filter. I want to get the Vararam CAI but 400 dollars is a lot of money for something that might make a little difference. If anybody has one please let me know.

It's a cumulative effect. CAI, headers, cam,tune.... CAI alone wouldn't be worth much power alone. Maybe 10hp. Each piece of the puzzle will add up to a nice gain. Each piece alone is only that, a small piece.

I'm guessing the filter that you have already has given you somewhat better throttle response so that much less to gain at this point.

keep your eyes peeled on the classifieds for an intake. they pop up all the time but the newer vararam might be a little hard to come by

Cold air intakes do make a difference. They make a bigger difference the more power you add. Personally I have a roto-fab intake, but Cold Air Inductions and vararam make great intakes as well.

You'll get a little from it. A big part of the stock intake is designed to reduce noise, the consequence is a little less airflow. The LS3/L99 engine can pull in a little more air than it allows.

However, the engine can only pull so much air. A cold air intake really comes into play when you start increasing the amount of air the engine can pull, cam heads, larger displacements etc.

I wouldn't pay $400 to put one on a stock engine. I was patient and kept on the look out for a used one in classifieds. Bought a C.A.I. intake for $130 locally. I had to paint it, but it was in good shape and still working well. I did not experience a huge seat of pants boost from it though.

That is without a tune. For those who don't want to watch it, highest pull on the stock truck was 297HP/331TQ. Threw on a Cold Air Inductions intake and re-dyno'd for a pull of 321HP/351TQ. Almost a 25HP gain without a tune. As other have stated, the more mods you introduce, the more it helps out. Worth it in my opinion.

Go with the Roto Fab intake. I got mine on sale for $300 and it was worth it. I strapped my car to the dyno, did a bone stock pull. Installed the roto fab intake and gained 15whp with NO tune. So yes, it does make a difference. Once you add headers you'll definitely want to get a tune though. Now, these cars are quite heavy so 15whp isn't going to feel much different but when you look at the numbers it makes sense.

Here's a spreadsheet with dyno'd testing results.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...Ae4/edit#gid=0

I have a CAI brand on mine, it's the best according to the above sheet. 13.1 hp at peak.

Happy motoring!!

It's even better when you look at the second test and pair it with a race scoop for a gain of 18HP at peak
