Low oil pressure again
Hey guys I'm kinda down kinda pissed. As the title says I have low oil pressure again. I was on my way to the tuner yesterday to get an updated tranny tune and looked down at the gauges and noticed I was at roughly 15 psi at the stop light. So I went ahead and went to the tuner and noticed the lifters sounded louder then usual. So I got my new tranny tune from the tuner and drove home and also noticed my high pressure of 50 psi at cruising was now at 30 psi. So here I am at home all depressed so I changed my oil. Nothing in the oil so that's good. So I went on a test drive today and all of the sudden my oil pressure was back. So I pull over to change my tune on the tranny a little turn the car off and then restarted it with the new tranny tune and my oil pressure was back to 15 psi again at idle and 30 psi at cruising. So I don't know what to think. Is the oil pressure relief valve in the pump going screwy or what? Also I have the melling 10355hv pump. Any ideas?
Joe

No I actually checked it via obd with hp tuners it was at 15 psi. I had a prior data log that I looked at before this happened and I had 34 psi at idle. Plus my lifters are louder.

Hptuners just uses the signal from the same sensor.

Oh yeah. Don't know what I was thinking. lol. But my lifters are a little more noisy. Maybe I should change the sensor though. I've heard it's a real pain though.

It takes a little patience but can be done without removing the intake. Good luck.

How likely is it that the sensor is really bad? Because it still works with increased rpm. I don't know how many post I've read where people have thought that was the issue and had the stealer replace it and still had an issue after wards.

Time to check it with a mechanical gauge, although I have no idea what that will take.

As mentioned ...
Check the pressure with a mechanical gauge and you are clear. If the pressure is OK, you probably have either a clogged sensor or it is damaged. If the pressure is low, it will need to replace the oil pump.

Has anyone ever used the oil galley plug on the front drivers side of the block to test for oil pressure? It's a direct feed from the oil pump, that should tell me right?

You can try to do it without removing the intake, but its a PITA and will leave you with a cut up hand and lots of cursing lol. If you have big hands don't even bother.

I have used the galley plug at the front drivers side of the block, and yes, it will give a direct reading of pressure from the pump. I'd check it at both places, personally, so you have a clear picture of what exactly is what and where.
I used a cheap mechanical gauge from AutoZone/Advance/etc., and drilled and tapped an old oil galley plug to accept the 1/8"-NPT mechanical gauge fitting. If you go that route, it will fit in both locations FYI. |
