Coil Bind or Steering Spring?

At todays track day my car started making a very strange sound. It sounds like coil bind but it feels and sounds like it may be coming from the center of the car near around firewall. Initially it sounded like it came from a shock but as the day went on it seemed to move.

I noticed it mostly when I came off track and it was a hot day, mid 90s. It seemed to only be present after a session and would go away if the car sat and cooled down.

I did several small circles and was able to get it to repeat for a little bit after a session but every time I got out to inspect it and got back in it would go away. I checked both of the front coils and nothing was obviously loose.

No other steering symptoms like the known steering problem in the 17s. The only symptom i got was the "boinngg" sound as i turned the wheel to pull back in the paddocks and back into my space.

The car is a last 2018 ZLE on it's 3rd season of tracking.

Experienced the exact same issue for the first time in my ZLE this weekend also. Hot and humid day (mid 90s), after coming off track and turning the wheel while stationary or at very low speeds (pulling into a paddock space as you describe), I’d hear the same metallic “boing!” sound. I’ve been tracking my ‘19 for two years, and this weekend had probably the hottest ambient temps it’s seen, so perhaps it’s heat related?

I have 1500 miles on my 2021 and haven't tracked mine at all yet. I have been trying to track down the exact same issue on mine. I am taking it to the dealership next Monday to see what they can find. I have done everything possible that I can think of to find and no luck.

My car did it once on a hot day exactly how you guys are explaining. Definitely interested if someone can figure it out I tried to bounce the car to recreate the noise and that was a fail.

I'll let you all know what they say at the dealership. I have been trying to figure it out for a month and have had no luck. Mine is so bad it's embarrassing to drive it past 15 miles as it seems to be when it starts doing it and won't quit until it cools off for a day. Very odd issue. It doesn't seem to affect anything handling wise but it scared the crap out of my wife when she drove it once. She thought she hit something. Lol

I'm driving it back to OKC to have it looked at as the dealerships here are total garbage. I wouldn't let them touch a used Honda. Lol

I had the same noise when backing out of the garage a few times last year then it went away and never returned.

Wow....it is amazing so many other people have had this mystery sound. So glad I am not the only one or imagining this. Let's try and keep this post alive and hopefully we can report back with findings. I think we all agree it seems to be heat related though.

I hope to have some answers next week to the issue. 2 previous ZL1's that I have had didn't have this problem although one of them was not a ZLE. I hope they can find something within the week and I'll report back to everyone.

Not sure if you are experiencing the same sound. I've had two occurances that were repaired by my dealer.

1. Passenger rear DSSV failed and was replaced.

2. Front brake pads replaced as diagnosed as 'faulty'

In each instance the repair fixed the noise. Mostly noticeable after hard driving either on street or track and could be felt through the steering wheel and pedals. Both moving forward and in reverse.

My 2 cents...

What was faulty with the rear DSSV? Also what was faulty with the front brake pads? Really curious about the brake pad and how they go faulty. I think that one was the dealer just grasping at straws but curious to learn more.

I’ve had the “boing” as well usually at low speeds when hitting a small bump or uneven terrain. It will “boing” when turning left and then again when you straighten back out. It’s very sporadic

1.DSSV blew a deal of some sort. Fluid everywhere! Clunk whenever I touch the brakes - forward or reverse.

2. I too called bulls**t on the pads. But if they wanted to replace them I said go for it. Said there was a gap between the rotor and the pad but that to me indicates a caliper issue. They replaced them and the clunk disappeared. I don't get it myself, but whatever. All is good lol.

Yours sounded different ours is a definite Boing sound. Like a spring binding and releasing.
