ZL1 Supercharger Lid Going On the 2017 Z06

Appears Z06 to get the new SC lid like the ZL1. Hang on!

"Updates come after some owners complain of heat issues.

With a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 cranking out 650 horsepower, it’s no surprise that the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 gets hot. In fact, some customers have found it gets way, way too hot.

As a result, Chevrolet will update the 2017 Z06 with improved cooling components to keep that LT4 engine running smoothly on track.

Tadge Juechter, Corvette executive chief engineer, says that a small number of customers reported heatsoak or overheating issues when running their Z06s hard on track. The exact number might have been less than five percent of all buyers, Juechter said, but those drivers complained loudly about the issues. As part of his engineering team’s emphasis on “continual improvement,” updates are coming this fall.

The 2017 Z06 will receive a new hood with improved cooling vents and some other changes “for additional cooling on the track.” Chevrolet says more precise details on the tweaks will come later this year.

Production of the Z06 is currently suspended so Chevrolet’s Bowling Green, Kentucky, factory can crank out the first batch of Corvette Grand Sports; the 2017 Z06 will enter production this fall."

If the larger lid is strictly for helping the lt4 run cooler, that puts to bed any idea that the different lid on the new ZL1 would lead to significantly more power than the Z06 is making. Oh well...

Less heat equals more power....but I get what you're alluding to.

Very interesting. I still maintain the ZL1 will have the most GM hp in the stable for 2017... Vette boys r upset. Ya ya ya.. One year boys one year ... All for "FIFTY" and to put focus back on Camaro and help with sluggish sales ..

All good news for 2017 ZL1 owners!

I love how he phrased the total number of affected buyers. 5% of buyers is probably at least 75% of all those who actually tracked their cars...so basically almost everyone. Just happy the zl1 setup won't mimic this.

Or same power for longer. I used to have a 640whp CTS-V and upgrades to the SC lid and heat exchanger system just gave you longer before hitting heat soak/timing retard.

It's all a bit silly. Everyone wants to be number 1 in something but to really win you have to earn it. I don't believe in T Ball. You don't just get the highest horsepower engine because you're named Corvette and you're entitled to it. If we're going to have a challenge give both teams the same resources and see which car comes out on top. NASCAR does it to an extent. How would you feel if they said , sorry guys only Robbie Gordon can run a more powerful engine. The rest of you have to just use one hamster.

Watch the Z06 get a power bump with the new lid but the ZL1 still make no more than 650 hp.

Hierarchy is gone... right.

Why not just make the 650 higher?

Because these go to 11

Unlike the ZL1, the 2017 Order guide is already up for 2017 Corvette for every model. Unless they come out with a 17.5 model year , which will have all the 17 owners crying foul, the 2017 have 650 hp. Book closed!

It seemed inevitable that would happen after seeing the new lid on the ZL1. At least GM finally acknowledged the issue and went after it.

Were you expecting them to somehow add enough to the LT4 to beat the Hellcat's output & maybe match the Z06 in a straight line, without changing anything important enough to require a new engine designation, and then make that engine exclusively for the ZL1, while the Corvette & CTS-V keep going along at a 'mere' 650 (640)? Because thats pretty much impossible.

Or are you hoping that on paper, the ZL1 would get rated for just a smidge more than the Z06. Not enough to actually make the car faster (which is generally the point of adding more power), but juuuust enough so that the Camaro crowd could thumb their noses at the Corvette crowd.

Exactly! See this is why logic is irrelevant!

This is the news I was waiting for, now I just need an independent 3rd party (magazine test) to verify. The overheating is real for the Z06, 650hp is useless if 9 miles into your HPDE you're overheating or your heat-soak, timing pulling beast is down 100 ponies. This is great news, let's hope it's legit.
