Camaro SS as a trip car

How do you all feel about using your Camaro SS as a trip car? I mean, how much wear and tear does it do to our cars? Mind you I have a 1LE (less tire wear and bigger gear ratio really) but im thinking about doing a 1000 mile round trip in a month or two. Any thoughts?

Car currently has 800 miles. I'm not old enough to rent a car quite yet :(

I don't have a 1LE, but I do have a SS and I drove it from eastern Pennsylvania to Missouri, then down to Oklahoma and back to Pennsylvania last summer. Car rode great, gas mileage was respectable (25 mpg average), and I looked good on the trip. Also, wife had just had a serious accident a couple months prior and was still hurting rather badly (sitting in a car for long periods of time was not comfortable for her). She loved the Camaro's ride and was as comfortable as she could be the whole time.

A 1000 mile round trip? Sounds more like a commute!

What are you waiting for? The Camaro is great for road trips. It's a luxury car with attitude.

I took my SS on a 2000 mile trip. Great trip. I think the SS ride is softer than the 1LE and the gearing is more highway friendly. At 70 mph I'm turning around 1600 rpm allowing me to get about 25 mpg's.

Someone with a 1LE should chime in. I heard they ride rather harsh compared to the SS. Not sure though......

I dd the crap outta mine. 4 and a half months and just under 11k miles. Drive it dude that whats you spen. 37k for right lol. Driving mine to texas next week from northern Ohio, looking forward to it (and im not stock).

Op do not pamper and be afraid to drive your car. It is made for that very purpose, I have major credit cards and am 29 (old enough to rent) and would never even think about renting a car with something new. I guess to each their own though

Not sure what you mean by less tire wear and bigger gear ratio? Yes, our 1les have different wheels and tires and the gear ratios have been optimized with the 3.91 rear for the track but that won't really matter when you are cruising at 70mph in 6th gear. If anything, the tire wear will be increased because these Goodyear supercar f1 tires only last about 10,000 miles anyway.

As for the drive I think it will be one of the most enjoyable 1000 mile trips you ever make. If you are going for great mileage then you may want to rent a Nissan Altima or something similar.

Thanks everyone for your input

I'm 23, I have to be 25 to rent. The only thing holding me back is money, since..you know..I just bought a brand new Camaro hahaha. I'd love to do a road trip, I just don't wanna pay big bucks down the road cause again the tire tread looks really small (and they're expensive to replace!). I don't have a single doubt it'll be comfortable, I'm just wondering if its appropriate to take a high performance car on a long trip (reliability speaking). Sounds like it is

I've gone back to my parent's several times and that's a 500 mile round trip. The 1LE's ride isn't that harsh since most highways are pretty smooth. Since you don't have many miles on it, you want to vary your speed. If you use cruise control you'll want to move it up or down to vary speed so your engine doesn't run at the same RPM. I'd even suggest running in fifth every once in a while.

Even though I have a much softer riding 2SS/RS convertible, one of the first things I did was buy a second set of wheels and tires. I spec'd UHP A/S on the second set of wheels for two reasons.

1. I knew I had a couple of lengthy road trips planned and I didn't want to burn up the soft OE max summers on the highway and

2. I wanted some light snow capability just in case I got caught out late in the season.

Tire Rack is your friend. In fact, there is a TR rep on duty here. Contact him.

Can't speak for the 1LE but the SS vert is an excellent road car.
