Auto Tranny Temp

I have a 2015 2SS/RS L99. Auto transmission temp runs a little over 180 by the console gauges on hot days in traffic. Is this normal? I really hate anything over 180, however I suppose one can't be too sure how accurate those gauges are either. Thoughts? Car has 1700 miles on it.

Sounds normal to me. Can always upgrade to an aftermarket cooler to reduce temps even more.

Thanks, guess I'm not going to worry about it as long as it doesn't go much higher.

PM SoChrisB about a trans cooler. I met him over the weekend and he was talking about how well his trans cooler worked and kept his temps at or below 180 even at the track with a supercharged L99. It was quite impressive.

Use Hammdo's strategy and buy the better oil pan

Not only will your trans be much cooler in these hot summers but you'll be able to change your fluid whenever you wanted.

I find mine runs hot too. It is only ever at 180 on the highway. In stop and go it will get up to about 215 or 220 which I don't like personally but it seems to be what it does. I would say it is about halfway between the center mark (180) and the first white line (250) so thats how I guess it is 215 or so.

It has never gone higher than that yet mind you. I think the trans cooler on these cars is more of a heater in fact. My coolant will hit 220 at times so its no wonder the trans is up near that too.

I asked my tuner about this a while back and he said its not a problem. I know the Dexron VI can handle higher temps than the old stuff did.

Is your gauge in Celsius or Farenheit? Mine in Celsius and sits right at 80 on the gauge.

No mine is in F as it was a U.S market car brought back to Canada but the 180 would be about 82C I would think. Its the same gauge and scale just with different numbers...

It bugs me that my trans seems to run hotter than everyone elses around here or so it seems. It warms up higher pretty quick once there is a fair bit of shifting in slow traffic. I often wondered if it had anything to do with the tune but the truth is I never payed attention to it until I noticed it up a bit higher one day. So I really can't say for sure. The next time its at the dealer I was going to get them to verify the fluid level is where it should be.

Thx yeah I just don't feel good about it. I'm not sure what else would explain it other than fluid level? The tune shouldn't be an issue as the firm shifts are easier on the clutches as there is less slip which would cause more heat I would think. I'm back on the original (most aggressive) tune BTW. Although it was the same on the softer tunes too so that isn't a factor at least.

I wish this car had a damned dipstick for the trans. How lame is that?

I stopped by my dealer yesterday but the trans guy had left for the day. So the SA said he would ask him about my temps and call me back on Monday. He assured me the temps I'm seeing won't hurt anything in the mean time though. He says his truck will sometimes hit 250 F or 120C but that seems really high to me. He asked me if I ever saw a code or anything and I said no and that the trans works just fine but runs a bit too warm doing it.

I suspect they will tell me its normal even though we think it might not be here. If they want to check it I was thinking I may want to return the car to the all stock tune? Any thoughts on that one?
