Track Prep - Brake Fluid Amount

Last year I had my 1SS in for some recall work, and while it was there I had them change my brake fluid. I handed them 3 bottles of Motul 600. I was thinking 2 would be enough, but wanted an extra just in case it was needed. They of course flushed all three bottles through. (Which was fine with me).

Ok, one year later, time to change the fluid with fresh Motul 600. At almost $20 a bottle, I’d rather not waste it, but this is the brakes we're talking about, so this is not the place to cheap out.

How much fluid is actually needed to do a “full” system flush, and know it's all good?

The full system is just under one liter, if I remember right.

A year may be enough time (depending on miles, temp, and conditions) to discolor the fluid enough to tell a difference between the old stuff and the new stuff...and obviously, that is the goal of a thorough bleed.

Guess what guys??? I'm doing this in about 20 minutes. Perhaps I can be convinced to add a teaspoon of super blue to figure out the flush rate??

So, OminouSS: what's the verdict? 2 bottles or 3?

Ok...so, it was right about 1200 ml of Motul. I probably could have done it with two bottles, but I went super thorough on the right rear. As you know that will take the most fluid and I started there. It took me a side to get the color comparison down. I think it was Joe who said 1 liter? He's about spot on. I plan to run it a hundred miles and draw some fluid to inspect to see if it diluted. I never figured how a gravity flush really cleaned out the whole caliper.

the nipple is opposite the side where the fluid enters the caliper. So in series its fluid in > Pistons > Nipple. Theres no where else for the fluid to go, so your fine. I do a full flush before the season, and flush the calipers after every track weekend.

As long as you don't break the system open and introduce any air it is pretty easy to bleed the brakes at home using the pump/hold/open method.

I plan on putting some DOT 5.1 in mine here soon as well.

Makes perfect sense, thanks. Do you think you're seeing temperatures high enough at the caliper to compromise the fluid? If so, what pads are you running? I am guessing that the normal operating rotor temps are somewhere around 900-100f. I think it's possible we can push them to 1400 depending on the situation.. These are heavy cars. I'd like to run a digital temp sensor to the fronts one day just to get a feel for how hot the fluid is reaching. I do a touch test on the caliper when I get back to the pits and it does not feel to me that I'd be boiling. Are you running alcon tape or a bleeder sensor?

I have a Joes Tire temp digital guage too that I'll shoot across it next weekend. I just don't know how much I can rely on that given it's aluminum and what I really want to know is the temp of the pad or steel cup. I'm all ears if somebody has a reliable method.
