I Locked My Key Inside my Car

Yesterday, after mt bike ride I throw my backpack in the trunk of my otherwise locked car using the button below the trunk. Key fob is inside my pack so trunk opens due to proximity of the fob. I close the trunk and go to open the driver's side door. Nope! I go to open the trunk... NOPE! I'm now locked out of my car with the key fob inside and literally inches away from the trunk opening button.

Is this a glitch? I thought locking a key fob inside was impossible to accomplish.

OTOH I did get to see how to break into modern cars, it's not that hard. I have Onstar of course but the car isn't in cell range, I had to get a ride into town so there was no way to confirm if onstar would connect and the door would be open when I got back to the car... and of course my phone and wallet are also inside the car in my backpack. It was a PITA but only cost me a little over an hour.

One way most cars will screw you is if you start the car then leave the fob behind... I've done that in my driveway and it warns you, then on 2nd press of the start/stop button it'll shut down and won't restart without the fob. But the way I locked myself out seems like a glitch.

Car thought you were inside. If you were inside and locked your doors because an angry person wanted at you, wouldn’t it be silly if someone could just open your door because the fob was in proximity? (Think about it)

Key fob always in your pants pocket....always!

Yeah, that makes sense... I did not think of that... key fob will not go in pack again!

I've been putting the f#$@ing thing in my pack for years too...

A helpful way to bypass this is with myChevorlet you have a remote key fob and can unlock your doors and other stuff idk if you need onstar or not i have onstar but i think you can use it without.

Yup... and I was out of cell range so couldn't call onstar with a friend's phone.

I'll just have to remember that when you unlock the trunk using the button it doesn't unlock the entire car, and it's then possible to then lock your keys inside the trunk. Hopefully this prevents others from making the same mistake.

Lol, not only did I lock my key in my car but I'm also one of the few that uses a rack.

Car is nightfall grey, pic was touched up by google and sent back to me. And believe it or not, this is EXACTLY where the car was parked when I locked my key in it. Pic was taken in the fall, probably October. The Camaro is actually a great car for hauling bikes, the weight and drag of the bikes and gear doesn't effect it much vs smaller cars in terms of both handling and mpg. My previous STi would struggle to get 20 mpg highway with bikes and gear, the Camaro gets over 25 mpg and has 150 more hp.

I haven't had to do it with the Camaro, yet, but my Mustang had problems with teh safety feature to prevent lockouts and I had to call roadside multiple times because I'd muck it up but when they show up they pop that door open in all of about 2 minutes, tops.

This happened to me once but the doors unlocked when I closed the trunk and of course it did the three short honks to remind me the key was left in the vehicle. I pressed the trunk button near the license plate and nothing. I opened the driver's door and pushed the trunk release and it opened. So it's weird that yours didn't do that.

Yeah, I'm not sure it adds up...

- The car was locked from the outside to begin with, so I'm not in the car.

- I open the trunk from the outside, so I'm obviously NOT in the car.

- I don't unlock or open the doors, so I can't get into the car unless I go in through the trunk.

I wonder if programming changed due to security issues or if this was just a glitch...

Yeah that is strange. Mine was also locked and I didn't even notice until it did the honk. When the trunk didn't open with the button near the license plate my heart dropped. Then I go check the driver's door and it had unlocked. I should try it again at home and see what it does.
