I agree, Its important to keep the 5w if you have SBE motor. Thats your cold viscosity. Find it funny guys put a cam in and think they need 20w-50 race oil!

But in a high hp application if you use to low of a viscosity oil you will induce blow by there for losing hp because the higher viscosity oil will seal the piston rings better.

5w is the cold viscosity which again, is what is recommended for SBE , i assume you are not running high RPMs when cold! I run 5w-50 so the 50 is the hot viscosity which i feel better running than 30.

Yeah I understand what the 5w is I guess what I should of said was weight. Lol 😆

All these recommendations are great but I had already made my mind up on which brands of oils to go with being one of the three,

LS Driven https://www.summitracing.com/parts/jgr-02906
VR1 Racing https://www.summitracing.com/parts/vlv-679083
Mobile 1 https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mob-124315-1

I've already decided to go with the VR1 but not entirely sure on what weight to go with. I'm thinking about 10W30 for the winter and 5W40 for the summer.

Just curious why would you go to a 10W for the winter? Now being in Texas I am guessing it usually doesn't get to cold. Have you thought about doing the Driven LS for winter and their 40 Weight for the summer? Or were both your choices Valvoline brand?

I'm not entirely sure why I picked the 10w stuff. Actually hoping it's just a tad thicker than the 5w stuff but not really sure. But I was thinking of doing the LS Driven 5W30 for winter and their 40 for summer but like I said before I just went with the VR1 because my machinist recommended it. I figured he rebuilt over 1k ls engines and he probably has a good idea on what engine oil works best. I don't think there is a big difference between the two though their both high zzdp I believe.

I found a clue on my oil cap as to what GM thinks I should use, so I use that. In my opinion, Changing oil weights can lead to a bunch of unanticipated consequences due to changes in flow characteristicss…I’m not an engineer, but I like to think the folks that built the car were, and know what viscosity works best

Valvoline is from what I read a great oil as well so I don't think you are going wrong there. Years ago you used to get a range for different Temperatures in the owners manual and they over lapped quite a bit.

Well maybe if I had a stock engine that would be fine but in my engine the only thing that is stock is the engine block, oh wait that's even been honed over also. So maybe if was running a stock engine I would go with what the oil cap said but I don't even have the stock oil cap anymore.
