The igniter on my weber grill has been sparking to what's left of the rusted plates for 20 years. The gas always seems to find the spark.

to be fair, if that spark takes a fraction of a second longer to reach the gas, that will throw the timing off on a detonation that needs to start, complete, and reset as much as 16 times a second.

but yea, i dont think these plugs are meant for performance changes unless you're measuring at the end of the lifespan of what you're comparing to.. because it's the lifespan that is supposed to be the main improvement.

I agree with the "keep the performance good for longer" assessment.

The performance isn't really all that significant even in the NGK marketing material, so no.

That said, spark plug designs do make a difference. Some of those old cars can see some minor improvement if they switch from those thick tip spark plugs to modern iridium fine tip replacements. With our cars already having fine tip spark plugs, the difference would be almost nothing when switched to a ruthenium unit.

I came from a 2017 Subaru WRX... Spark plugs were pretty easy.. just had to unbolt the ECU, push it to the side a bit, and pull the airbox and such, and use a good ratchet and extensions Lol. I was also front mount IC and had a bunch of other things which made the engine bay super spacious which helped. Now.. my old 2000 Ford Explorer 5.0 AWD with headers.. spark plugs a bit of a pain as you need to pull the front wheels off, wheel liner, etc.
